LBJ Grasslands 2016-2017

The season vastly approaches! Who's excited? Anybody running trail cameras and getting some nice footage?

Shake N' Bake 07-08-2016 12:32 PM

I got a lease this year, not sure if I will make it out there or not. But I'm in.

troy_w_7 07-08-2016 12:34 PM

Nice! Where is your lease at?

Brentwalkertx 07-13-2016 10:54 PM

Havent been out since the end of January to pick up cameras. Havent been out there since. Got a new job and do nothing but work now, but will be out there hopefully in the next week or 2 to set cameras.

Razorback01 07-15-2016 07:14 PM

Going up tomorrow to prowl around.

That sucks! I use master locks and haven't had a problem so far.

I found a new spot this weekend, about a mile in. Lots of old rubs and fresh sign. Bumped about 3-4 does on the edge of a bedding area. Come on October!

Scouting

I think i will start stalking on opening morning as well. I do most of my scouting on google maps as well though

Jtaps 08-21-2016 10:07 AM

Well no lottery win for me, guess I've gotta stick to lbj

Rodgers484 08-23-2016 07:15 PM

I will be putting cams up in a week we will see what the movements like this year

HdFilmmaker 08-23-2016 08:01 PM

I'll meet you out there.

ghostgoblin22 08-31-2016 04:34 PM

you don't need a permit to hunt this place correct?

HdFilmmaker 08-31-2016 05:10 PM

No, you don't need a permit to hunt LBJ or Caddo grasslands.

Not quite true. On the LBJ you only need a hunting license.

On the Caddo N.G. there are three units. The Bois D'Arc and Ladonia Units are WMAs. You need the APH permit to hunt those areas.

The Fannin Unit does not require the APH permit. It is archery only for deer and hogs.

Keep us posted how it is out there. I probably won't get out until around the 20th, but I was thinking of checking out that area

LBJ today

No dove today, just a lot of walking, found some promising stand locations. A couple of old stands (ladder and climber).

Is there a RV park on 730 north of Decatur? Decent park, wife/pets etc? Up around 50/70/66/67/68/53/60 etc?

Anyone know what the attached are? Lots of PVC driven into the ground, what I thought at first was a bround blind, or feeder. Bets I can tell something to do with the oak pests.

Froggy 09-04-2016 09:10 PM

RV Parks

Double Duty RV Park

http://www.ddrv.co/

A Plus RV Park

http://www.aplusrvpark.com/

Here's where I would recommend. Small, family owned on the north side of Unit 32. A couple of members on here keep their campers there

Texas Grown 09-04-2016 09:17 PM

There's camping at Blackcreek lake. Was $3 day on an honor system last I was there. No running water or electric. But has restrooms, and picnic tables at campsites. View of the lake is kinda scenic with the pines in the backdrop. There are a couple of shaded areas. And some camp sights in the sun for late season camping. There is also a hiking trail very close by that you can walk to from the campgrounds. It has up to 30 miles of trails if I remember right.

Razorback01 09-05-2016 06:34 AM

Thanks for the info on the parks.

TG, there hasn't been many areas on the fed land that I would want to try to get a 34' 5th wheel with 4 slides. If I go on my own I'll tent camp it- but if the queen goes along it needs full hookups- she aint using one of the bathrooms.

Texas Grown 09-05-2016 12:28 PM

I think there's room to get that thing in there and out with out a problem. But the full hook-ups are a different story :D. I didn't know if your trailer was fully self contained or not.

Razorback01 09-05-2016 07:38 PM

It's fully self contained if it's just me, not with the boss.

Be10dwn 09-05-2016 07:40 PM

I didn't hunt lbj last season except for opening day for archery season because I had a lease in Arkansas. Work has prevented me from keeping my lease, so I'm going to hit lbj. I used to be able to go a lot during the week, but my new job will only allow me to be a weekend warrior

Nice lil hogger.

Anybody do any good on the dove?

IkemanTX 09-14-2016 12:06 AM

Anyone have a decent KMZ or KML files of the property lines out at LBJ? The forestry service and APH maps are abysmally inaccurate and lacking in detail...

you need to download ARCGIS explorer on your phone. I have found these maps very accurate while using the GPS on my phone. Download the Caddo-LBJ grasslands map. I can give more direction if needed. It is the standard app for goverment maps.

I have that for the Lake Lewisville area, but the search function is not finding Caddo or LBJ. Any other way to look for maps?

Found it... Had to include national in the name to get more than the location.

Good. That in conjunction with the lot number map on the lbj grassland page is all you need. I use the lot number mail to make notes on what I found at each one that may be useful to be whether it be for deer, hogs, frogs, bowfishing, etc
