    New fireplace

Here is our old fire place.
We never really liked the gray marble. I built this mantel many years ago and it's time for a change.
After giving the front of the house a facelift, I had some stone left over and some brick left over from the smokehouse. So I had to use all these leftovers for something.

Now need to build a wall strong enough to hold the stone.
      3/4" plywood framed with cedar.

Oh yeah, this isn't a real fireplace anymore.
We might add a gas stove later.
        We'll see...

The mantel is a 2" slab of cedar.

Framing all finished, time for some brick. Well sort of brick. The brick in the floor is some old brick donated by another tbh member. I liked the old look.
The brick inside is a veneer, real brick just 1/2" thick. The veneer was purchased from Amazon. Yall should have seen the little UPS girl carrying 100 lbs of brick veneer up the steps!

I used a thin set mortar for the veneer right on the plywood. Hope this holds up. They said it would at YouTube university.
I guess I'll be remodeling again in a couple years if they were wrong!

Now for the hardie board backing for the stone.
I'll come back to this again in a bit.

Now more of the brick donated by Lynn21 for the arch.

Ok, stone backer board finished over the arch and started putting wire mesh on then cover the whole thing with mortar.

Going to place the stone under the mantel first.

I grossly miscounted the veneer and had to order more from Amazon.
This time the UPS driver asked me what was in the box that weighed so much!
