How many 50 lb bags of corn....

will fit in an 85 gallon feeder (with funnel)?

Karl at Ultramatic is gonna convert my 55's to 85's soon in anticipation of finding a new lease (trying to think positive!). Just wondering how many bags they hold. Thanks.

I suck at math or I could be like Steve Scott (Cull) and come up with a calculus equation and figure it out down to the kernel with a volume per second distribution factor to determine the date/time/hour/minute that my feeder would run dry. :D

Chris 02-15-2008 11:53 AM

about 551.36lb. :D

trophy8 02-15-2008 11:54 AM

well if 50 gallon one holds 7-8 maybe 9 bags, then i would say 13-14 bags? just a guess there with little math involved hope it helps ya a little bit

DWG 02-15-2008 11:55 AM

Guessing 11 or 12 bags depending if it has a funnel in it.

cj7zrcool 02-15-2008 11:55 AM

My 55gal feeder holds 300#, sooo...an 85gal should hold 463.675#'s or 9.274 50# bags. ;)

Dang engineers. :)

Chew 02-15-2008 11:56 AM

Dang...it ranges from 9 to 14 bags.

Maybe I should have asked if anyone actually has an 85 gallon feeder! =)

Double L 02-15-2008 11:58 AM

My answer was gonna be "I don't know" just cause I don't have one!

trophy8 02-15-2008 11:58 AM

chew you asked senor!:) you asked , and i told:)

let me give you this answr. its holds alot. thats an honest up front, truthful answer. haha

Dale Moser 02-15-2008 12:00 PM

My 85 gallon buckets hold 11 bags, but I don't use funnels.

Snakelover 02-15-2008 12:02 PM

Educated guess: My 55 gallon feeders without funnel hold slightly over 7 bags, and with funnel holds slightly over 6 bags. So I'm going to say take away one bag for funnel. 85 gallons is 64% larger than 55 gallons, so... 7 bags x 1.64= 11.48, subtract one bag for funnel... you should be looking at right around 10 1/2 bags.

Chew 02-15-2008 12:02 PM

Dale...have they ever clogged up on you. I don't have funnels in the 55's and the one that my big 10 pt was coming in to daily clogged up a week before opening day. :(

Well sure David. Everyone knows that. But what if the corn swells during high humidity? I was really hoping someone could give me a more detailed answer! :D

Dale Moser 02-15-2008 12:05 PM

I HATE funnels!

I've had one clog a time or two, but no more (probably not as much) as my bro-in-law's feeder with a funnel.

tuthdoc 02-15-2008 12:06 PM

With a slip over lid, which I recommend and got mine from Karl, and a shallow funnel, I can get just over 11 sacks, can't stuff 12.

trailboss 02-15-2008 12:07 PM

10.833396 bags w/o funnel - but that's just a guess! :)

bobo 02-15-2008 12:07 PM

External or Internal funnel?

I'm not sure you're feed store isn't sticking it to you, or "short bagging". THEY DO IT! I can't get more than 6 50# bags in a 55 gallon feeder.

Chew 02-15-2008 12:10 PM

Internal funnel, Bobo.

TD, did you get the shallow funnel from Karl also?

tuthdoc 02-15-2008 12:31 PM

I don't use funnels on 55 gallon feeders, but on double stacks and 85 gallon feeders, I like a funnel. It allows the feeder to clean itself when it runs out and not have that "funnel" of old corn or protein along the sides. We use bulk corn a lot and it's dustier and dirtier and the funnel helps me clean the feeder without taking it down. Without a funnel, I'd take it down and clean it at least once per year.

I have two 85's, Mailman has one, Bower has 1.

Chew 02-15-2008 12:34 PM

Tuthdoc, where'd ya get the shallow funnel?

tuthdoc 02-15-2008 12:39 PM

I've had one of the funnels and barrels since we hunted Sonora in the early 90's. The rest were all gotten from Karl. There are rocks or weights on top of the lids of the first two feeders (Mailman and Bower). My two have heavy springs on two sides that attach to the barrel and lid to hold the lids on. The slip over lids give you a few days more corn and make it easier to fill. You don't have to worry about getting the lid and ring just right. With my springs, I can even put the lid on the barrel with a little hum in the corn and it'll settle over the next couple days of throwing.

huntmaster 02-15-2008 12:49 PM

I have 2 w/funnels and they hold 9+bags

Africanbowhunter 02-15-2008 01:03 PM

where do you get 1/2 bags of corn anyway? :)

Mike Murphey 02-15-2008 01:44 PM

Mine will hold 12 bags

Tink, I get'em at the feed store. Apparently, they just CHARGE me for a whole bag! :D

Thanks, Dale. You're probably right!

Snakelover 02-15-2008 01:53 PM

And all this time I thought I was getting stronger! :o

Same here.

HEARTBUSTER 02-15-2008 02:47 PM

I Have 80 Gallon Feeder And They Hold 10 Bags To The Top With Funnel And The Funnel Is About 8 Inchs Tall At The Top And Starts To Funnel Down.....so My Guess Is 10 1/2 To 11

Mine's got a funnel. And the slip-over lid from Karl.
about 470 lbs. (9+ bags)

55 gallon hold 6 .

Buckrider 02-15-2008 03:38 PM

9-10 bags

Humper 02-15-2008 03:43 PM

Chew you can come up to Jacksboro and I'll let you fill mine and then you will know:) heck you can come shot a pig while your at it.

SaltwaterSlick 02-15-2008 04:46 PM

Bobby, You've seen my feeders, the one at the Vega stand is a 55 gallon feeder with the funnel on the outside of the barrel. It holds 8 bags of corn. You can get almost as much increase in capacity with your existing feeder barrels by just putting the funnels on the outside. If you'll get the funnels, we can weld em up at my place. I've got a nibbler too to cut the bottom out of the old barrels. If you get the 85 gallon barrels, have Karl put the funnels on the outside of the barrel for added capacity. it will give you almost 4 more sacks per feeder.

crittergitter 02-15-2008 04:53 PM

my guess with a funnel would be 10.

i have a 95 gallon feeder and it holds 13

Steve W 02-15-2008 05:18 PM

Chew, now you will need to calculate the volume time difference between 55 gal vs 85 gal and see is gas saved versus amount of trips to fill feeders. and throw in the spend time dispense rate to see if just cutting back 1 second of spin time will offset the difference of volume between 55 and 85 negating the need for xtra 4-5 bags of corn during the spring/summer per trip. :D

Well, when you figure the square root of the nearest mesquite tree divided by the hypotenuse of the triangle formed by your feeder legs you should have about 32 days worth of corn in your feeder. Unless, a pregnant raccoon shimmies up the feeder. :)

gekko man 02-15-2008 07:10 PM

9.27272726 bags!!!!!

You can chum with the remainder of the .7272728 th of a bag.

Take 10 bags and a good pocket knife...and don't hand the knife to me!!!!

trust him when gekko says dont give him your knife. i use to have a good knife:D

Injun 02-15-2008 08:01 PM

It'll hold all of em you put in it! if not raise the feed rates

Sergio_III 02-15-2008 08:04 PM

I have been wondering if this type of container will work for a gravity type feeder?

Has anyone used one of these before?

http://www.biodieselwarehouse.com/xc...63e05f6a59.jpg

They range from 15 gal. to about 5,000 gal.

ByronB 02-16-2008 12:01 AM

we put 11 bags in our 85 gallon feeder and it has a funnell in it.

Chew 02-16-2008 12:25 AM

Does anyone have a picture of a feeder with an external funnel? Trying to visualize how my motor/timer box would fit on the barrel. Thanks.

I've got three 85s with funnels from Karl and they hold 10 bags each.

I normally don't use a funnel but got tired of the tree rats chewing everything up. With the funnel the timer and battery fit nicely in the void.

9 bags i think
