This weekend was more what I expected hunting. Lots of deer. Hitting the feed pretty hard.

Gary Roberson 10-29-2018 10:12 AM

It is drying in some areas but anywhere it is flat, still very wet when you break through the crust. Now they are saying that we can expect rain again on Wednesday which will make it extremely difficult to get around this weekend. If it does rain as expected, I recommend that you stay off all unimproved two track roads in a pickup, use UTVs, ATVs only. Good luck and stay safe out there.
The Hunter's Blowout is this weekend.
Adios,
Gary

Gary Roberson 10-29-2018 12:20 PM

Right now, they are predicting about half an inch mid week. If we get that much or more, it will be a mess.
Adios,
Gary

Capp35 10-31-2018 11:21 AM

7 days and counting till I come down.

Gary, tell them to hold off on the rain next week. HaHa

I bet Callan Lane is just a rutted mess.

Gary Roberson 10-31-2018 11:52 AM

Callan Lane is a wreck but then so is every county road in Menard County. Yesterday, wunderground was predicting about an inch for today but now they are back to nearly half an inch. If it falls pretty fast, might be better than if it just hangs around all day. Light drizzle falling this morning turning to rain this afternoon. I will give you a report once this front moves through. Hogs are everywhere; they love the wet pastures and cooler temps. A couple of buddies were south of town last weekend and killed 10 with crossbows and Clint killed three from the pickup while trying to check on cows.
Adios,
Gary

Capp35 10-31-2018 09:02 PM

I would appreciate an update early next week as I am coming up Wednesday night.
I guess we are lucky, I have only seen 1 hog in 15 years on our place. That was on a game camera, and was last year.

Bryan2014 10-31-2018 09:11 PM

We’ve never seen a pig on our place

where are you located in the county? lol im on 125 acres SE side and ive killed 70 or more in the last 3 years 3 last week with my bow, 8-10 coming in at a time

DT50 10-31-2018 09:17 PM

got back last night from a 4 day hunt and left due the incoming weather. feeder activity was the best I have seen so far this season numbers went from 3/4 deer per sit to 10/12. im gonna say the rain has rotted my acorns :) I passed on a 125 10 point that took everything I had to hang my bow back on the hanger lol

My place is about 10 miles north on Callan Lane.
Pigs must be staying closer to the river?

Gary Roberson 11-01-2018 12:09 PM

I had about a quarter inch in town yesterday. It was the wettest quarter inch rain that I ever saw, it is extremely wet out there.
Adios,
Gary

elliscountyhog 11-01-2018 12:19 PM

We are off 190 near Clear Creek Lake and have pigs. Not overran but enough we should be able to shoot a few.

Your not kidding, I went down Wednesday because they dropped the chance of rain. Callan lane was absolute soup and had one spot where the water was about a foot deep. Should have taken the truck instead of the Subaru but most places have a bottom you can dig down to.

Starting to see some activity and finally saw some deer that weren't still wearing diapers. I had a nice 10 point come in acting aggressive and chasing does but we're not quite there yet. Forecast is calling for another front and hopefully it will bump the activity some more.

Capp35 11-07-2018 02:17 PM

Heading up tonight.
Wish me luck on the hunting....... and the roads.

I'll be going up Callan Lane late tonight.
Usually do about 40ish mph. I don't think that will happen tonight.
Pics of your buck?
Thanks, can use the luck.

Used to date a crazy girl that lived in Splendora. A Brandy something. Probably late 40s now? LMAO

chewjr 11-07-2018 04:15 PM

Yeah i had to go about 10 mph. I’ll post pics in a bit.

wilcox1088 11-08-2018 01:26 PM

Thanks guys. Shoulda been a bow kill but couldn’t hold off

Capp35 11-12-2018 11:29 AM

Saw a nice 10pt Thursday evening. I was in a box (rainy) with a rifle (I bow hunt) and could not make myself shoot it with the 7mag. It was beating the bushes and pawing the ground so I assumed it would be back the next day.
Long story short, never assume. Heard shots over the fence (next ranch over) the next morning, and it never showed up the next 3 days on our 1200 acre lease.
Very green, and looked like spring. Deer would come nibble the corn and then start walking off grazing on the green grass.

Gary, sorry we missed you on Thursday.
My brother and I were going to take you out to lunch. Lazy Ladle was as great as ever! :D

Capp35, so sorry I had to make a mad dash to Colorado City. I did not get back into town until nearly 5:00 PM. Hope that you had a great hunt. Really cooling off here today, supposed to be in the 20's tomorrow morning and Wednesday morning. When are you planning to return?
Adios,
Gary

elliscountyhog 11-12-2018 12:05 PM

Seen two good bucks (110-120) have a fight of fights. One came out busted up. While they were fighting 4 other bucks came in checking it out. Watched a couple younger ones chase some does. Finally started seeing axis again which is great. Look forward to next trip.

Probably not till the first of December.
Eric might be sooner than that.

We need a good hard freeze desperately. HaHa

Gary Roberson 11-13-2018 02:51 PM

You got one this morning...25 degrees!
Adios,
Gary

Gary Roberson 11-14-2018 09:47 AM

16 degrees on Las Moras Creek just west of town this morning...so much for the rattlesnakes.
Adios,
Gary

Ouch, luckily I'm east of Town.

I hope my trailer doesn't have any busted water pipe surprises waiting on me when I get back up there tomorrow night.

..........

(As posted in another thread)

I was lucky enough to take out a songdog last week and turned it in to Kothmanns for the bounty.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a304ccbb18.jpg

I was wondering if anyone knew the going rate for foxes and bobcats?

Iíve taken pictures of both from the stand not realizing the local ranchers donít want them around.
Iíd turn one in for corn money and to help the ranchers out of course [emoji51].

elliscountyhog 11-14-2018 04:01 PM

Ouch is right. Im just west of town off 190. My covert cameras even quite working with that cold. Likely killed my batteries.

stonecold 11-14-2018 10:09 PM

The bucks have separated, and the does are teasing them. Lots of activity all day long. Mostly younger bucks, next ten days to two weeks ought to be killer.

Gary Roberson 11-15-2018 10:05 AM

The Thanksgiving week should be really good for rutting activity as it is warming up but still not quite crazy.
Adios,
Gary
