2016 Draw Hunts

Wont be a whole lot longer and TPWD should come out with their draw hunt opportunities. Isn't like July and they are online?

It was July 1st last year, I happened on it and posted a link to it.

Been on my mind as well but unfortunately I'm on Zero points for the Rifle buck hunt after drawing Matagorda Island. Can't complain it was a great hunt.

Really hoping to get back to the Chap or Daughtry on a Javi hunt to stretch out the long guns.

If you have the free time, go to the area and do standby. A lot of people don't show up for the hunts.

setx 05-22-2016 11:24 AM

I thought about goin and standing by for a hunt but always afraid people would claim their tags or be last in line and not get one and i live a long way from most of the hunts i would try for.... anyone ever scored a tag by standing by? If so do a lot of people show up to try and get one by standing by?

Depends where u go. Not many standby spots anymore, since they changed the system.
You can look at last years standby spots vs applicants numbers online. Some places it's almost a shoo in. Others it's a one 10 chance

This...the standby spots aren't as prevalent as before. It also depends on what hunts. Ones like Brazos Bend have a ton of people show up for standby due to the close proximity to Houston. It's easy for someone to take the day off and drive an hour for the chance, unlike trying to go on standby 4+ hours away.

setx 05-22-2016 01:51 PM

Ok thanks... yeah I hear ya most of the hunting I would be like a 4 or 5 + hour drive for me

Very excite. Not sure if I will have any time this year between NM bear and Elk but I'm anxious to see what's up for offer.

Does anyone know of you lose your preference points if you don't apply in a category every year?

The only way to lose your points is to get drawn.

I think the hunts are during the week too, which sucks. The guy that taught me to bow hunt has been on almost all the hunts. As others have said, in the past the standby worked better. He quit when the system went online. Evidently, when it was mail-in, it was very probable to get on hunts.

It sucks for a lot of people, but this is one of the few perks of working shift work that I enjoy. Nearly everything (parties & events) is held on weekends, causing us to miss out.

Anyone on here hunted Grainger before?

Thinking about putting in this year.

Grainger lake WMA? There's a few folks on here who have been out to Grainger. :D

Last time I was out there chasing pigs I saw probably 30 deer.

Can someone explain these draw hunts. Isn't it hunting on public land?

Go here and click "Check Status" button. Sign in with your info, and it will show all your stuff.

Loyalty Points by Category? or the Individual Loyalty points?

Bowhuntamistad 05-23-2016 04:14 PM

They really need to create a points only option...it would help everybody out in the end.

Your points are kept by category (Archery Deer, Gun Deer; Either Sex, etc....). You don't have to apply for the same hunt area in a category every year. Your category points are kept, no matter what area you apply for year to year.

niceg3s 05-23-2016 07:45 PM

Even if you aren't going to hunt this year, it's good to sign up for each category anyway if you felt like you might hunt it in the future. Odds are you won't win, but I would still want to build up the points.

I used to think this...I guess it depends on how lucky or unlucky you are. I knew I couldn't make any of the hunts two years ago, so proceeded to apply for all my usual categories, while making sure to put in for the locations usually difficult to draw. Of course I was drawn for Chaparral (which we drew a little over 5 years ago too), and a couple other long shots were drawn. It sucked because I lost all my preference points in those categories.

That's why they need a points only option. Those that don't want to hunt get to buy their points anyways and those that do want to hunt get their chance. I put in and hope I don't get drawn every year.

Other states do it, why can't Texas?

popknott 05-23-2016 10:44 PM

I'm excited for the draw hunts. I look forward to the draw every year. I agree that I don't want to be drawn every year. But it's exciting for my kids to get picked.

Can't wait to start reviewing dates, hunts and locations. Good luck everyone.

Agreed on the standby spots being pretty sparse now with the second draw, which I am a big fan of. You can call the WMA or park a couple days before the hunt and they can usually tell you how many standby spots they think they will have.

You haven't even hit the average yet..I'm sitting on 6-7 I believe in most categories but I also got drawn for the chap with only a few so it's all luck I apply solo for archery and believe that's what helped me get drawn for the chap

Why do you think applying solo helped?

I've got around 5 PP in most categories. As of right now I'm not to concerned about getting drawn, just wanting to accumulate points.

I need to start putting in again this year. Been about 15 years since I gave it a shot

Slick8 05-29-2016 08:32 PM

On the Matagorda island hunt last year, they said they were going to pull one card for standby. Three groups of 3-4 and one single were including 1 group that hired a guide for transport.

Of the 4 cards, guess which one was picked, the single. I told that group of 3 to pair up with the single as it would have increased their odds....they looked at me like a cow staring at a new gate.

lavacahunter 05-29-2016 11:16 PM

That one guy hunted both hunts on the island.

Well I originally thought it helped like this...if they draw 50 names and there down to 2 and your a single and others have 3 on their card you increase your odds? But they draw cards not by number of people so I think I'm wrong....either way only times I've been drawn I applied solo(archery). All the years applying with my dad and brother in law we haven't been drawn but my dad's name will go on the gun hunt card with me u til he can't hunt anymore..want to make a draw hunt with him.

This year will be the 18th year we've put in for Gun Deer Either Sex, without being picked.

Hit and miss. There are some hunt categories that I have been drawn on multiple times in the last twelve years (like GDE) but some I haven't (like Antlerless). I still like the new system.

grizzman 06-01-2016 01:12 PM

And yeah, the hunts should roll out around the first part of July. Some have due dates early in August, so pay attention to those deadlines.

James 06-01-2016 03:58 PM

I am looking forward to see what changes they made to the drawing system. Last I heard they were trying to implement a drawing system to increase odds for the guys with lots of points. Really hope this happens!

Its all heresay at this point but it sure would be nice to see this in place for 2016, but 2017 is more realistic.
