    Hillcountry exotics

I went to a customers house in Ingram he has a fairly impressive ranchhouse, he had 2 feeders one on the backside and one on the front. On my way to his house I saw a few blackbuck antelope and 10 or so Axis deer in a field. When I got to his residence I saw about 20 of the antelope at the front of his house and probably 30 or 40 axis at the back one he told me he has not seen a whitetail in years. I could not decide if this was good or bad I was just shocked. What do yall think?
He told me he lets people cull a few every now and then.

I have been told that exotics will displace white tail deer. I don't know that for a fact, but from what the rancher is saying, it may be true.

I would rather see the exotics. They taste a whole lot better!

I would rather see the whitetail, pronghorn and elk; native species.

First off native species are what belongs here. I like an exotic hunt as much as the next guy, but not at the cost of the natural.

Blackbuck will not displace the deer because they are more grazers than broswers. I think they are more like cattle. The axis are more competition, but I think as much from there aggression around the food as what they eat. Plus the always travel in gangs...dang animal gangstas!

Shoot and eat them all! Chunky has spoken!

It will be a rifle hunt I think though.

Exotics are a double edged sword! Fun to hunt in the off season, but are detrimental to native wildlife if they're not kept in check. Unfortunately, as much as I love exotics, they are out of control in some parts of Texas.

Chunky ... I like your philosophy!

Yeah, since they're already here, we might as well make the best of it.

I hear Axis is some goood, mmm, eatin'.

We have a place near Junction that is low fenced and has no high-fence neighbors.
We have a lot of exotics around as well as hogs and plenty of deer.
I've found that the whitetail have learned to run in packs like the AXIS do. They have figured out the strength in numbers strategy. We also put a whoopin on the AXIS and Fallow whenever we get the chance. That is some fine eating.

There are just so many whitetail out there that they really outnumber the exotics. Can't wait to get out there for turkey season.
