As both Life and Hunting can go, both have zigged and zagged on me over the years. I've never been able to kill an Axis buck. Back in the day my lease SW of Rocksprings didn't have Axis at the time. I've had the opportunity to go on hunts where Axis bucks were on the hit list, but didn't show. I had a generous friend that had a ranch covered up with Axis, and would let friends come work and shoot does, leaving the bucks for customers. Then I moved to OK and didn't have more opportunities.
Well that changed last week. My brother put together a free range hunt for him, me and our other hunting buddy down west of Roosevelt, TX. It was a quick hunt and a good hunt. We saw some monsters, but couldn't close the deal on them (off property). We did get some respectable ones for sure. I got a fully velvet one!!
We stopped by Lyssy and Eckel. They have a really cool Axis with a big horn growth off to one side like I've never seen before.
Can't wait to smoke those tenderloins!
