    Houston Area Public Duck Hunting

All, I’m not interested in details about a spot. I’m asking about the process.

I’m used to showing up at 7:00 pm the day prior and sleeping in your truck overnight to secure a spot the next morning (JD Murphee Late 2000s).

I read on the Justin Hurst info that they do a lottery at 4:30. Can someone tell me how that works?

Also, it looks like it’s mostly drive-in to a parking area and then walk to water. Is that the case? UTV required?

    Thanks

Someone told me recently that you cant camp out in your vehicle any more at Justin Hurst. They used to hand out cow ear tags with a number in the morning, then you would drive to the office wait for your number then select your spot. Your hunting spot was marked by a florescent marker a few hundred yards or so off the road. Basically hunting "potholes". I haven't been in a long time. Cool place.

This is correct. Best to be in line by 4:00, and they draw at 4:30 up to a pre-determined number of spots. A few folks usually get turned away. Download their app for finding your spot. The poles can be hard to find in the dark. It can be a decent haul through the muck, so don’t pack too heavy. We had plenty of shot opportunities the days I have been.

Thank you!!! That’s exactly the info that I was looking to confirm. Might give it a shot after the split.

We had a couple of great hunts, limits on the saturday opener and the tuesday after then it started going downhill. Lots of hunters showing up, not enough good spots. This rain is going to help a lot, it was high and dry in some areas.
