    Bulldog ?’s

Wife just said she wants a bulldog. I’ve always liked the English bulldog but that’s about it nothing more.
My question is, if you have/had one pros and cons? I have 2 kids, 8 & 10 and a male chessy, how is their social demeanor? Any help deciding on this would be great help.

    Also, any reputable breeders too.

    Thanks in advance

We’ve had several English bulldogs. They are an interesting breed - extremely loyal and very observant. They really need lots of attention, petting, etc. Mine two current ones want to be leaned up against someone all the time.

Each one is different but the ones I’ve had are great with kids. They will follow my nephews around everywhere like a momma hen and never so much as growled at them even when they probably should have.

They can be hit or miss with other dogs. Mine don’t mind other dogs and actually play better with larger breeds. They have a good temperament as long as they get their attention/1 on 1 time.

The most important thing is, I honestly suggest you not buy from a breeder unless you really do lots of homework and find the 1% of English bulldog breeders that aren’t just looking to make a few bucks. I’d recommend getting one from a rescue who’s 6 months or older. By this time you’ll know their health problems. Even with a reputable breeder English bulldogs can have lots of health problems that could cost thousands of dollars per year. The second most important thing is getting them to a vet who knows English bulldogs, most don’t, getting them on a good diet (treats included and no people food), watch their skin/ears every day and get them to the Vet ASAP, when they show signs of irritation/infection/GI problems.

If the health problems scare you, get a French bulldog. Still cool little pets but don’t have as many health issues.

Awesome dogs. Mine farted like a freight train. He was still cool though.

I’ll pass. Had one that was probably the most loyal dog I’ve ever had but dumber than a box of rocks, drooled like crazy, farted worse than any creature on earth and cost a butt load of money. LOVED everybody and everything she ever met and wanted nothing but to be with “her people”. That said, I won’t have another English. If I ever get the itch I’ll go for a Frenchie!

I’ve raised English bulldogs since 2006. There is no other dog like them as far as having an almost human personality and demeanor. They expect to be treated like an actual member of the family in pretty much every way. The health problems you hear about typically aren’t as bad as people make them seem. They do require a bit more care and attention to detail when it comes to their health. One thing I will stress more than anything, they are NOT outside dogs. Yes they love to go out and play, but they do not take heat well. And when I say heat, I mean anything above 80 degrees is hot for an EB. Also, if you don’t have the money for their vet bills, you don’t have the money for the dog. I’m not saying you will need it, but if you do not have an extra $700-$1000 just laying around pretty much all the time, you can’t afford their care. I could go on and on for hours about them, but if you have any questions, let me know.

I do not have any dogs for sale currently. I most likely won’t either.

That’s funny - my first English is so dang smart that if she had thumbs I’m sure she could drive my truck. The others, well they wouldn’t win an IQ test with a rock but still had big personalities and you couldn’t help but like them.

Yes, they fart and snore worse than grandpa after eating chili chased with Jim Beam.

                🤣
Actually sounds like a great dog, I always have someone to blame when I fart.

We have 2, one that we bought as a puppy, and one we rescued after Harvey. Both are incredibly smart, very loving, enjoy wrestling/playing, have distinct personalities, snore like a sawyer, drool worse than a teenage boy on prom night, and fart worse than any human could imagine. But the Harvey rescue is about to eat us alive in vet fees. However, after what that poor fella went thru, we decided that we were in it for the long haul.

That being said, once these are gone it'll be back to Boston Terriers for us. My wife had 2 EB's when she was younger and wanted another. She's scratched that itch and wants to go back to BT's now.

But EB's are awesome companions for sure. They love to sleep at your feet or by your side on the couch, they don't like being alone, and love to ride anywhere you're going. So don't get one and think they'll be satisfied being left alone

                      Cons would prob be price.

My GF picked this one up from Traders Village. Dont think it is a full English but is a super sweet dog. My understanding is that the English BD are smaller and healthier. This one is pretty sweet and good around kids. Really just liked to be petted and is smart enough that she trained the girlfriend pretty well.

We raised them for show in my first marriage, and my current wife and I have one that is a rescue. 90% of the medical issues boils down to breeding. People see them as an easy way to make money. Drools lips, cherry eyes, skin problems are hereditary, so get one from a good breeder and you should avoid all them. Breeding bad dogs gives you bad pups. We had no vet bills over other breeds. Feed them a food that has no soy and the farting goes away for the most part. They are as stubborn as all get out and it comes across a lot of times as being dumb. But they just try to do what they want to and don't listen sometimes. Loving dogs that crave attention and love people and every one of them has their own personality.

We had a high bred English growing up. My Dad always wanted one and mother brought Sarge from Indiana to Arkansas. Problem was he bonded with her and was indifferent to him. X10 on the farting and snoring. His health issues were due to skin allergies.

What about water? We have a pool and no real way of fencing it off to keep animals out of it. Can they swim and like I did with my chessy, teach them where to go to get out of the pool? I have a good size sun deck in the pool and my chessy is know to get in the pool when it gets hot, I can picture the bully rolling off if they play on the deck.

I've ever seen one that can float, much less swim. They sink like a rock
