    Alligator Hunting

My crew and I drew out for gators at J.D.Murphree WMA this year and I have some questions.

1: What size hook is the best? And where to get some?
2: Stainless steel hooks or Regular?
3: Can and or should I use a steel leader?

I plan on using the hook and line method with the bait hanging above the water about 16” I have hunted a lot of things but never a gator. To say that we are excited would be an understatement. It only took me 9 years to draw out for this tag.

Any help from anyone that’s been there and or has experience hunting gator would be GREATLY appreciated.

We were drawn this year as well, after the hunt being canceled last year.

I bought this kit for the hooks and line, everything I’ve read said steel isn’t necessary.

The Fish Net Company, now doing business as Nets & More. For fishing nets and supplies, commercial and recreational, as well as sports nets and supplies. From stock, or custom made to any specification required. Our qualified and friendly staff is experienced in net engineering, and is committed to satisfy every customer's needs.

What dates will you be out there? We drew 9/12-13

We get a 600' spool of 3/16" solid braid nylon every year from this website. You could definitely get by with a little less but better safe than sorry, especially at only $37 for 600 feet.

Also if you get line this thick you will need hooks that have a wide eye to fit the line through. Here are some that will work on the same website.

Mustad 3407-DT, I believe we use the 3.5/0 hook

In FL we usually used 24" of cable that was crimped on one end to a welded eye tuna hook, this type hook won't straighten out and the eye won't pull open either. The other end had a large marlin size swivel. Caught lots of gators using this rig.

The cable will go through the hook eye were using rope directly won't allow that. Our set up was for gators over 10' which is when they start adding weight.

            Good luck on your hunt.
