    Teacher strikes...

My older sister is a teacher in Arizona and is prepared to walkout next Thursday...

I love my sister but can’t support her in this. She complains about the pay but previously willingly worked in a private school for less $. I can’t reconcile how that was ok, but now as a state employee who makes more and has better benefits she is somehow entitled to more.

She’s normally very conservative, I think the Phoenix sun/heat has finally gotten to her.

So if you go on strike you are not a conservative?

I'm betting the workload, student/teacher ratio, and stress are much higher in public schools than her private school.

It’s their right to strike. There’s usually a good reason for it.

Why should a fast food worker make as much as a teacher?

because our school systems keep producing fast food worker quality students?

Nice come back. My wife is a middle school math teacher and I too feel the school system is doing a disservice to the kids by the stupid Starr testing. They put out so much content at such fast pace some kids just can’t keep up and get behind. My wife was told she cannot give a grade less than 50 on any assignment even if it is turned in blank. This is part of the reason the kids are entitled, I mean if I no call no show for a week can I get 50% of my pay ?

Pay in the public schools, for the most part, is terrible compared to the private sector. If everyone left because pay is so bad then we would not have any public school employees at all. School bus driver pay is SERIOUSLY horrible, more so than teacher pay. How bad is it? Well, my average MONTHLY take home is $630.

The only reason most public school employees stay is to help the kids, but for most people this is getting VERY difficult to do. It is starting to get difficult for a lot of people to make ends meet while getting verbally and physically assaulted by students and sometimes parents with no recourse.

So it comes as no surprise that these strikes and walkouts are occurring.

                  I'm in as well

Not really up on the reason for these particular strikes, so I shouldn't be commenting -- but I'm assuming it's based on pay, dissatisfaction with the way the schools are run, and a general lack of support from administration and parents.....

My mom was a teacher, and most of her friends were teachers as well.

It simply isn't what it used to be and I'm afraid that the death of public schools is imminent.

                    Here's my thought.
They knew the pay better they took the job....

I do not think it has as much to do with the pay as much as all the BS that has been implemented into the schools over he last decade. Sure the pay is low but it’s public service.

I heard on the news that there is a 20% pay increase on the table and the teachers are still planning on striking. It's not about the pay this time. It's about everything else if the 20% is true...

Although 20% of not much is still not much...

We are in contract negotiations right now and passed a strike authorization vote last month. "IF" we strike it won't be over pay either. Working conditions and benefits are key here. And our company is making money hand over fist.

Teachers and first responders are woefully and disgracefully underpaid. Let’s get these congressional salaries under control and divide the money amongst teachers and first responders.

But to many of your points, I know it’s not entirely about money. I know many teachers and what’s being pushed on them to teach to these kids in many cases is the problem.

Conservatives generally believe in a free market. If you don’t like your compensation go do something that will earn what you think you are worth. Go be a corporate trainer, although hour for hour, that probably actually pays the same and in some cases less. She gets 2 weeks vacation, 2 months off during the summer, 1 week fall break, 2 weeks at Christmas and a week for spring break. Use that time off to do a side hustle. Or if you are really passionate about teaching and want to change the system, then put together a business plan, get investors and forge a private school endeavor or charter school as an alternative to the public school system.

The average income for a teacher in Arizona is $43k, the median Household income is $55, 78% of the average household income by a single earner. I don’t begrudge anyone to make more money. But teachers get a contract, it’s not as through they were offered one amount then paid less.
