    High Performance Clothing

I have an Alaskan hunt coming up soon and was wondering some opinions on the brand of clothing needed. I will be bowhunting, the temperature is suppose to vary from 20° - 70°F with possibility of high winds and daily rain showers. The hunt will be in late may with melting snow and etc. With this being said, I am looking at Sitka gear, Kuiu, and some other name brand clothing. They are expensive, but are they worth it? I live in East Texas and leaving in hot humid May to go hunt in the cold climate of Alaska, I want to be warm but able to move around. We will be stalking and moving quite a bit. Any opinions or personal experiences?

Can’t go wrong with either one. Just know both are meant to be layered. Kuiu is cheaper.

There are other brands that are cheaper. Those 2, along with First Lite, are about the 3 most expensive brands of high performance hunting clothes available.

Check out Camofire daily. Yesterday they had a wide assortment of Krytek on sale.

Rain gear is where those two companies shine.

You can build a good layering system with Mountain Hardware, Columbia, prana, arteryx, OR Etc. For a lot less.

Where is a local place that one can try on the clothing?

Kuiu is only sold online through their weibsite. No retailers. Their sizes do run small, and are an athletic cut. Most people add 1-2 sizes up from their normal size.

Take a look at Skre Gear. I have Kuiu and Sitka gear as well. Skre makes a good line for less money and the fit of their line is better more comfortable in my opinion. Customer service is off the hook. You typically deal with the owner when you have a problem. For example my bride got me a couple pieces I didn't have for Christmas and she ordered wrong size. They have a no cost to you exchange if it does not fit. Good folks.

Forgot about Kryptek, good stuff if you like their pattern. I wore Kryptek in October elk hunt in Colorado. Great system worked well no complaints.

I have looked at the SKRE line of clothing. Yes, they are definitely cheaper for the amount of clothing that you receive. I like how they have the bundles of clothing for a price. Does anyone else have experience with this clothing?

I have hunted Alaska and Canada many times and I carry a mixed bag of high end gear! I’m not loyal to a brand but loyal to what works. I use Sitka stuff the most because it fits me better than Kuiu. I have some Sitka stuff that is 5-6 years old or more and I still wear it. I love the new subalpine camo and wore it a lot in the oaks and cedars this year in the hill country. I use kuiu rain gear almost exclusively. I love the different weights and fit. I strongly recommend good wool baselayers. Start with “silk” weight against your skin. I use smart wool, mec, icebreaker, firstlte, minus 33 for that layer. Next I go with a mid weight wool camo shirt like a firstlite or Sitka. Something I can hunt in if hot. I usually then get in to the Sitka layers with a vest, sweatshirt, jacket, and puffy for if it gets real cold. There are several reasons for spending money on quality gear if you head way up north or out west. First, you need a system you can layer and adjust for a wide range of temps. You need this entire system to be light and packable for travel. It must dry quickly for when you sweat and keep you alive if it gets wet——wool! Also, you must have the best rain gear you can afford. It’s gonna rain and being wet can make you miserable or even dead at moderate temperatures. If your cheap rain gear tears to shreds you are screwed!!! Finally, buy good boots and great socks. Get wool socks from a company like darn tough. That’s my opinion after hunting up there a couple times.

First Lite is running their "Tag Soup" sale right now, 20-40% off everthing. Not sure what all they have left as they are trying to clear inventory for the 2018 gear.

To be honest, I have no personal experience as I just picked up a few items during the sale for my first elk hunt this fall but the reviews are good and they seem comparable to the other major name brands such as Sitka, Kuiu, etc.

Kuiu has a retail store in Dixon, CA at the company. 2 hours NW of me, and I’m ordering online!
