Found a shed already. Your thoughts.

We found this shed 8 yards from one of our bow blinds. We saw this deer two weeks ago 1/2 a mile from our place on a wheat field down the FM road. We all thought he would get poached being so close to the road. When we saw him we thought he was 3-4 yrs old and had a bad limp.

First we thought , great he didn't get shot by a poacher and would be back next year.

Then we thought. He was limping badly. Was he injured beyond living and dropped his horn early because he was sick?

In our area the deer usually drop their horns in late February to March,

    What are your thoughts?

Well farts! I was gonna post a picture, but the interweb won't let me. I'll get it posted as soon as I can. It's got 4 inch mule deer forks on its G2 and G3.

Antlers come off when testosterone levels drop significantly. Usually this a natural response to photoperiod as monitored by the pituitary. But, nutrition and health factors can influence hormone levels as well. I'd guess the early drop may be related to the injury and declining health. Can't be certain though.

Stress from the rut and being hurt most likely caused him to drop early.

That buck probably heard about your deadeye grandson and decided to go ahead and drop before he found himself in the crosshairs next.

No problem. That is a mid 70s to maybe 80s buck. Yall are doing an outstanding job if you are letting bucks like that walk to full maturity.

When we d.w him in the field we all thought 180. But with this accurate info I'd say 165. He didn't have forks on the other side. Aand was only 16-17 wide. Still a great free range buck.

Wow what a buck (or half of one lol). Good luck next year, start a thread on him if he’s still around so we can follow along
