    2.8L 4 Cylinder Diesel??

Hopefully someone here has had first hand or knows the vehicle. Chevy came out with a 2.8L Diesel in their Colorado.
Anyone know ANYTHING about these? Printed text says 20 city and 28 hwy mpg. Supposed to have more towing capability than regular 1/2 ton. What's the real scoop?

No. The Colorado doesnt touch half tons unless you get down into v6 base models (not Ecoboost or ecodiesel)

No way a Colorado can do what a half ton does.

I don't but have been curious as well. Can't seem to find any used, and the new are almost as much as a full size.

According to the Chevy website 7,700lbs for towing.

My brother just got the GMC Canyon with this engine a few months ago. He loves his. Sent me a pic of his fuel mileage for the previous tank. It was 26 mpg. That's combination driving in town & hwy. He pulled his off road rig on a car hauler with it and is quite pleased.

Merc, I read the same thing. 7,700lbs towing. A small diesel truck getting close to 28 hwy and that much towing???
Pullersboy, thank you for posting. Hope I hear more like this.

Buddy of mine has been in one close to a year or better. Gets stupid good mileage but he hasn't towed anything. His is 2 wheel drive.

I'm not sure if it's the same motor as a Chevy cruze but my cousin has one with almost 100k on it. She still gets close to 40 mpg highway even at 80

I've been wondering how long it was going to take for US truck manufacturers (or more likely the buying public) to wake up about this. My cousin in Germany owns a tile business and hauls tons of materials all over the place. His company work truck ... a Ford with a THREE cylinder diesel. These small diesels wont do everything that a 3/4 ton or 1 ton will ... but they will certainly outperform most configurations of 1/2 ton gas engined trucks in just about every conceivable way (other than size and being built up into quasi-monster trucks).

The Chevy Cruise diesel is an underpowered 1.6l diesel while the Colorado/Canyon is a 2.8l unit. The only things they share in common is both are turbocharged 4 banger diesels.

Over the last 3 decades trucks keep getting bigger with more capabilities. The current Colorado/Canyon have about the same interior space and are more capable than a full size half ton truck from 30 years ago.

So would you consider a late 80’s Chevy or Ford truck to be a mini truck? For reference, the maximum towing capacity for an ‘87 half ton Chevy was 8k pounds.

The 2.8l diesel is not a very responsive engine due to factory tuning and factory transmission tuning. It is tuned to get incredible fuel economy, not to be a tow missile. There are a few tuners out there that have woken up this engine and made it be more responsive along with adding a little power.

You can’t just look at tow rating numbers that are given. What is the frame and breaking like ? A recent mode half ton might have the same tow rating as a 3/4 diesel from years ago but that diesel will handle the load wayyyyy better.
