Feeder pen to keep cows out

Just got on a lease and I'm thinking of setting up a pen. Thinking about doing a barb wire fence instead of hog panel due to deer being familiar with barb wire fences and not hog panels. It's late in the season to do hog panels.

I would much rather use barbed wire as long as I didnt have a big hog problem. Keeps the cows out and you can shoot through it.

^^This^^ If you are just keeping cattle out, barbed wire is the way to go. Be sure your corner posts are secure. If you want to keep hogs out, they will just laugh at barbed wire as they slip through it.

Will you be hunting from an elevated blind close the the feed pen? I wouldn't be afraid of hog panels if so.

Also...we put hog panel pens around existing feeders and the deer were in them the next day. Pens are round and roughly 40' in diameter.

Barb wire is fine but the deer will not react negatively to hog panels if you decide t0 go easier option.

There are hogs in the area. Just to keep the cows out. What deminisions would you recommend so deer feel comfortable?

make sure you get that barbed wire nice and tight. Otherwise the cows will push through the middle and top strands pretty easily

Will do. I've never done fence work before, but the guy that is on the lease with me has done some before.

Your not going to grt it tight ( and stay tight ) with out running bracing wires to strong stakes in 2 directions off each corner. You would be much better staking down hog panels. That is unless your using trees as part of your wire fence.

^^ This^^ use existing trees to nail to and pull from.

In helping a friend on my lease, we used barbed wire on live oak trees and stretched wire from one to the next, using a come-along and wire stretchers. We used t-posts as needed. The pen is about 40 yards across in both directions and it is pretty darned tight. It pis*ed the cows off somethin' fierce.

Not if you do it correctly. Tie off your barbed wire to your 4 main corner posts as tight as you can. Then push your wire from inside the pen with another center tpost for each of the 4 sections. Won't be too pretty but will be plenty tight.
