    USS Alabama

Been down at Orange Beach this week as a last hurrah before school starts. Drove into Mobile to go see the USS Alabama. The park wasn't too crowded since I think most schools have already started. It was blazing hot but still really cool to see again. My dad took my brother and I here in the mid-80's, back when you could still use the manual controls to move the AA guns and also climb all over the tanks and planes.

Went all the way up to the tip of the bow of the ol girl and caught an awesome pic.

Then we went to the aircraft museum, and they had an SR-71. Saw the be in San Diego a few years ago at the flight museum but it didn't have any info. The science behind. The SR-71 is pretty cool...especially since it is now outdated.

Well worth the stop if you ever have a chance to go. Oh and no way in H E double hockey sticks would you ever get me to serve on a submarine. The USS Drum is a tin can with bombs in board. No thank you! Lotta respect for the submariners.

        Nice!

That place is really cool. My parents took our family back in the late 80's. I took my wife and kids this past spring break on the way home from Florida. I figured we would be there for an hour or so. When we left, it had been 3 hours. I thought, "How in the world did we spend 3 hours there?" I guess I was having just as much fun as my kids and never looked at my watch.

Wait, you can't travers and elevate the AA guns on the Alabama anymore!?

**** it. When I was a kid I got to visit the North Carolina and I had the very best time of my young life fighting off imaginary kamikaze attacks.

I took my step son to the Alabama when he was about four and he had an amazing time working the guns there as well.

Unfortunately no. The control wheels have either been removed or disengaged. I tried every single one, much to the exhaustion of my family.

USACE or maybe it was USGS used to have a cool facility in Vicksburg where they modeled storm surge and also ran tests on different soil conditions for long term storage of military equipment. They had tanks, planes, AA guns, howitzers and all kinds of other stuff you could play on. Sadly that is gone too.
