I grew up in Cortez in the SW corner (four corners area). No pics but it's a beautiful area.

When we first went, we just followed our noses. You're not gonna see it all in a week or a month, but you are guaranteed to enjoy. Especially if you dodge the big cities !

      We enjoyed the National Forests.

Check out Trujillo Meadows camp. Awesome place to camp and good fishing in the Los Pinos river below the dam.

There's another cool place to go if you have a pop up camper. It's about 15 miles back on a gravel National Forest Service road. It goes to an old ghost town where the little train passes thru from Chama to Antonito. The Los Pinos river runs thru there also and fishing is pretty good there. Pretty far off the beaten path.

Some nice camping along the canejos river on the way to platoro. The river is loaded with fish, scenery is awesome, and the reservoir at platoro has Kokanee and rainbows.

Beetles are completely destroying the pines around Creede! I felt like I was driving thru a WW11 battle field... my whole family was speechless in the car for 30 minutes.

Outside of Pagosa Springs is a road that goes up to nipple and square top mountain, on this road there is a high meadow that the elk and deer come out into most every evening. You can camp any where on that road. Devils Mountain across the road from Chimney Rock is another good spot. I don't have pictures at work but the whole area is nice.

Pagosa Springs/Southfork/Creede. Beautiful area and tons on land to roam. Pull the camper off a forest service road and explore from there.

This would be my first choice as well. Loved fishing the conejos river (those cutthroats are beautiful) and there are a ton of elk in this area....not to mention deer and bear. There are several mountain lakes that are loaded with brookies if you are up for hiking.

When are you going? A lot of the country around Creede and Pagosa is still covered in snow. Maybe thats ok with you but keep it in mind if you are going soon.

That being said...it is awesome country and if you are going this summer you should consider it seriously. There is a hot spring that you can hike to just past the wolf creek campground. If you are driving west on hwy 160 you take a right on 648 and its just a couple miles to the end of the road. Theres a good turn around and several spots to camp along there. Follow the trail 3 miles to rainbow hot springs. Its a super easy trail thats well maintained. If you want views you can hike to the top of saddle mountain but its a leg burner. Really cool spot. There are dozens more around there too.

Another spot thats special to me is Silverjack Reservoir toward Montrose. Theres a free campground at the south end of the lake where the river flows in. Several trails to hike and awesome fishing in Clear and Rowdy lakes with very few people ever fishing at the further one. I grew up fishing there.

You cant go wrong up there if you stay away from the touristy parks etc. It really is Gods Country.
