    School me on yaks

My new bride and I are wanting to get a couple of kayaks. I want one to fish from and just be on the water. She's just wanting to get on the water.

What do I look for when looking at the different yaks?
What would be best for what we want to do?
    Does length matter?

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated as I know nothing about kayaks other than they float on water and are powered by me.

I'm no expert as I just bought my first last year. A lot depends on budget. I would suggest Academy if tight budget. They have some good ones but also some junk. ACK (Austin Canoe and Kayak) has demo days in the spring. Don't know if one near you if other similar store. Demo a few is your best way to know what you may like. There is thread on here

That has some good info and I did some research on another forum Texas Kayak Fisherman that was helpful. I was on real tight budget and bought one at academy for now and added some of my own redneck customization. I would suggest a 12 footer for stability unless cost is a factor.

If you find another one, holla!! I've been wanting one. You're close enough that we can go drink beer and paddle around the lake haha

For the price if you can swing it, stick with the higher end sit on tops from Academy. I was saving up for one and my wife went and bought me the green sit in that runs approx. $300. It's nice for beginners but sure has thrown a kink in my fishing plans, so I am still looking to get a higher end yak later.

Academy doesn't sell higher end sit on tops

Pescador is a decent boat for anybody under 200lbs. Beyond that you need to go to a kayak dealer, ideally a demo day and figure out what works for you.

DFW Kayak Fishing on FB is also a good source for used kayaks.
I would suggest you buy as nice as you can afford and go 12' or longer. Will track better and while providing a quicker ride will save you some paddling.
There's also the option of building one. Lot of info on TKF if you are interested in going that route.

I've been lurking, waiting for someone to comment on that. Way to go NJ! Lol. I'm kinda thinking about getting in to kayaking, but not ready to commit yet.
