    Depriming/Decapping 6.5x47 Lapua brass - NEED help!!

What are y'all using to deprime Lapua brass with the small primer pockets, with the 1.5mm flash hole - like the Lapua 6.5x47L brass uses?

I am setting up to start loading the new Lapua 6.5 Creedmoor brass and the smallest decapping pin I have around is a Redding pin that's 1.55mm/.059". It came with my Type S dies. Oddly, it actually will fit through the flash holes (I tried manually inserting them) but it grabs a bit, sometimes, and I don't think it'll fly - it's just too tight a fit. I did some Googling and found guys talking about turning down pins for use with these flash holes <---something I'd rather not mess with. I did find some Redding "undersized" pins (part #01059) that are .057" I'm wondering if these pins will work in a Lee Universal Decapping Die - my go-to depriming tool until now. I heard the Sinclair Decapper is great but I can't find one in stock right now. I'm looking for a die or tool that'll work real well with these tiny flash holes. Was hoping some of you 47L shooters can share your tricks with me! Lol!

I know Redding makes some decapping dies but they get HORRIBLE reviews everywhere I looked. Can't believe Redding would make something so crappy; but apparently they do.

Grrrrrr! Can't believe THIS is hanging me up! Lol!

Chuck a decapping pin in a drill and spin it over a piece of fine grit sandpaper. It is nothing to turn down a couple thou this way.

I have a Forster bushing neck sizer die and a Hornady full length resizer die for the 6.5x47 Lapua and the have standard decapping pin that are made for this flash hole. I don't have a decapping universal die so not sure if the pins are Interchangable. I am pretty sure the 6.5 creedmoor brass you mentioned is a large rifle primer with a larger decapping pin since it's based off the 243/308 parent case. It doesn't have the small flash hole like the 6.5x47L.

The Lapua Creedmoor brass is a small primer with 1.5mm flash hole.

I missed that it was the Lapua Creedmoor brass.

Have you looked at Wilson? You would also need a base.

              I'll try that, Jake. Thanks.

I looked at them but can't see that any of them are made small enough for that 1.5mm flash hole. All the specs I could find on the pin size show .062, which it too big. I'm going to call Wilson on Monday, though, to check.

I may have to get some of the Redding 01059 pins and start using the decapper in my FL die. Assuming they'll fit in there. But, I'd like to have one of those Wilson punches if they have one that'll work.

Have you uniformed the primer pockets and de-burred the flash holes ?

You only have to do this brass prep work 1x , with the correct size de-burring tool you can open up the flash holes to .062"

I would do this procedure and be done with it

I use the lee universal decaping die.

The decaping Pin in mine is .063
All of my flash holes were centered so I basically swaged them .004 more which to me is negligible in a flash hole. I do not chamfer the flash hole because lapua drills them and not stamps them. They all now go through the decaping process easy.

1.5 mm should be .060 so I would think your pins might work if the are .057-.059

I focus most of my time on the necks.

If it helps you I measured my wilson decaping pin also. It is
.059 and fits loosely in brand new lapua brass.

I use Redding Type S bushing dies and they come with proper sized pin 0.057".

I did uniform the primer pockets but I left the flash holes alone. I've never messed with the flash holes on Lapua brass. Maybe I'll just do that and be done with it. Lol.

If you go this route they recommend to set the stop so you don't cut a "funnel" inside the cartridge base.

There have been some questions on our Forum regarding the recommended procedure for flash-hole uniforming on Lapua 220 Russian (PPC parent), PPC and 6BR cases. The factory spec on these cases is 1.5 mm (.059) for the flash hole.

Thanks. I had read that and I ordered a pin vise and bit today; along with a Wilson punch and base AND a Hornady Universal decapping die. Turns out, Hornady makes a special rod/pin specifically for that small flash hole. It's not advertised or even sold through retailers - it's only available directly from them. It's like they're keeping it a secret. Lol.

I'll see which one works best and post up a review.
