Well it fianlly happened yesterday morning. I have been hunting this boy hard for the last 6 weeks. He has apperently become the dominant force on the property I hunt and has fought and run off 2 bigger bucks that I was wanting to shoot. As you will tell in the pics, over the last month he has broken off both brow tines and broke one of them off in the last week. I was dissapointed but I got meat in the freezer.
Here is how it went down. I had a buddy hunting with me yesterday and our objective was does or this particular buck. My buddy had him at first light but couldnt get a clear shot before he started running does all over the place, eventually past my stand at full stride. I was not even sure it was him at the time. About 7:30 things started happening. I heard movement all around me and had a few live decoys out in front of me. I then saw a buck coming towards me. I could tell he had horns and was big but that was it. He walked strait towards me and decided he had been running enough and laid down behind some scrub oak about 90 yards from me. Still not sure it was him.
Well I decided to wait him out and got out the blackberry and started reading the new post on this website. I almost gagged when I saw the pic of the arrow shaft through that guys hand. OUCH!!!! About an hour later some young bucks started moving in and this guy didnt like it at all and got up and started my way. Thats when I saw him and I realy lost my breath when I saw he had broken off the second brow. They were atleast 4+ inches when they were there. Well a couple of the young bucks ran off the does and chased them a little. They went almost out of view and the big boy went after them. I was able to keep him in sight but barely. I waited about 20 minutes and he was still out over 150 yards and I had a big doe I had been wanting at 20 yards. I almost drew then remembered my mom and wife always saying "patience is a virtue". Dont you hate when they are right.
I looked up and what do I see but this boy standing about 50 yards out looking at a doe that was coming towards me. He had a feeling something was up, he had that look about him. Well the doe came in to 15 yds and the buck stayed hung up until a little buck got between them. He wasnt having that and walked right in and started to push the doe off. He made one mistake though, he stopped for a split second to show the little buck who was boss. 30yds quartered away and I let the arrow fly. I saw blood the very instant I hit him. It was a little high and he ran further than I thought he would. I found him about 200 yds away, almost no blood because of the height of the shot. Perfect double lung, he was dead before he moved a step.
Here are a few pics. He was 16 in wide. Definately not my bigest buck but my bigest to date with the stick and string. I have not shot my gun at a deer in 3 years.
