Getting into Out of State Public Hunting

Just as the thread states. Me and a buddy want to start this early on, especially while we are still in our younger years.

I've searched through the search filter but its hard to find to much filter between threads dedicated to certain forest, live threads, etc. If there are any out there I missed please post them here.

We want to go after Elk, Pronghorn, and Mule Deer. I have a idea on how the lottery systems work with some states doing points/bonus points and what not however I haven't wrapped my head around the entire concept quite yet for each state and their methods.

So I guess the purpose of this thread is for any tips or tricks to these systems as in which states have better odds, which states are for chasing big bulls vs higher density of animals, DIY or guided, etc. Things along those lines.

I stumbled upon this site that seemed to give a good start but would love some input for those that have actually went through the process.

Guide to Nonresident Applications by Randy Newberg Hereā€™s a no-frills guide to navigating the black timber of nonresident tag applicationsĀ  You want to hunt elk. [...]

Thanks again fellas and I plan on keeping this thread busy along with filtering through others.

Sign up on Gohunt.com and you can do some serious research between states/species/units.

I would say the easiest way to get your feet wet would be to buy an OTC elk tag in Colorado. TONS of public land and unlimited tags in most units. Bow or rifle. You can also get a preference point in Colorado and still buy an OTC tag and hunt that year. That way you will be building PPs for a draw unit, but still get to go hunt.

Following along with you. I'm headed to Wyoming for speed goats in September, but I'm going with some guys who've done it and know what they're doing so I can't offer much help. I really want to get into Elk and Muleys in NM or CO or wherever.

Elk is over the counter in colorado.
All the info. Needed for each state is on the states website. Colorado and NM are the only two places i have gone. Colorado system is slightly more difficult to understand NM has very low odds these days.

I have a few years of public draw experience for Colorado elk. Still very green myself but I have learned to pick a lower success unit up north by the Divide and go in an scout my tail off vs a popular unit that takes years of points to draw for. We have found some absolute monsters in there but it took about 100 miles of foot work to find them. Well worth it and I average a tag every two years there. It's one of those places where if you don't put in work, you may not see a single elk. Well worth it to me, but I'm sure it depends on your goals and budget.

A good place to start might be antelope hunting in Wyoming. Most of the eastern units are private land and fairly easy to draw. Most ranches are gonna require a tresspass fee to hunt, but you'll be hunting on your own. If you should want to do this, you can apply for first, second, and third choices. If you don't draw your first choice, you get a preference point. This is the way you build points. Same system applies for elk. You can hunt every year in easy to draw areas while accumulating points in better areas. Other states are variations on this theme. You have to go to the states' websites to determine the differences in their respective point systems.

Bowsite.com is full of guys who hunt the West. Good luck !

In. Hoping to start within the next 2 years. Antelope in Wy seem like the easiest thing to start with from my few interactions with threads like this.

Target CO for your best chance. Forget NM hard to get a draw unless its a area nobody wants to hunt and they have no point system, lived there for 5 years and never got and elk draw, pulled deer twice and speed goat once.

You will owe me for this one. It's work packing into this area, but you will most likely be hunting alone. Tag is over the counter for elk and muley's or at least was last time I hunted there. Plenty of 300"+ bulls and an abnormal amount of non-typical genetics in the mule deer. You will want to hunt Castle Peak only in this area.
