    First Point report 11-01-11-03

We arrived at the gate at about 10:45 Sat. Morning and we were getting really excited. Mike met us there as he was coming back from a corn run in Uvalde. Right after we checked in and signed our paperwork, 2 guys had scored on nice bucks and had brought them to camp.

One buck was shot a day before and just found after the coyotes had their way with him. This is a very nice deer that scored a little over 150...

The other deer that had been shot that morning was a great looking buck scoring 129...

After seeing some great deer brought in, we were as excited as can be so we headed out to get the blinds set up. We started with my dad's pop-up. I think it looked pretty good!...

On to mine where I found an old pit blind and dug it out a bit more. I felt pretty confident. I had it about 20 yards from the road and two shooting lanes...

The first evening, we all had deer on us the whole time. No shooters, but some young bucks and lots of does. It was really exciting.

Sunday, the first morning hunt was pretty slow, but we still saw deer.

Sunday evening I had a bunch of deer on the road and about 6:00 a nice shooter showed up in my 1st shooting lane. An eight scoring about 125-130, he made his way to my second shooting lane just as planned. He moved into position as I drew my bow. I waited for the perfect time, he stepped forward and I put the pin right on the boiler room. As I released the arrow on a sure thing, it hit a limb right in front of me sending the arrow off course and missing the deer totally!

I was sick! I had a genuine opprotunity and blew it.

Monday morning was very busy with deer movement. My buddy Tom that went with us saw a VERY BIG shooter buck that he surprised when he looke dright at him as he came out.

Although we had no kill, we had an AWESOME time at First Point. Mike and Nancy are top notch and we will be going back soon.

Here is a pic I took through the binoculars!...

Good to have met you down there. I had the group of 3 next to the kitchen....

I hunted 3. Mike said that there was a 170+ in there along pasture 4 border and 130+ 8, 140+ 10 and 150+ 10 on the long road....

He said he had seen a 160+ in the back of 5 and a 170 in the front side.

I hunted on the fence side with the feeder. He said several big bodied deer had been seen on the road.

            I MISSED one of them!!!!!!!

I think so. That's where my buddy saw that big buck yesterday morning.

Tyak, Glad you had a great time. I hope my info helped in some way. I've never hunted pasture 5, and only hunted 4 once when the ranch first opened. Sorry about the miss...but hopefully it was a learning lesson and that mistake will not happen again.

so the 140/day and no kill fee includes the deer you killed? no other hidden costs like per inch or something crazy?

No other hidden cost, and yes it is free range on a low fence. THe total lease is like 20k but their pasture is 4-5k (i don't remember exactly) Mike and Nancy are great people and I highly recommend the ranch. But don't go there if you only have a couple days to hunt and don't go there if you think it is going to be a cake walk. This is WELL hunted but 20 hunters a day and the deer have seen just about everything. You have to be willing to go the extra mile, including moving and rebuilding your blind DAILY.
But that is what it takes.

The buck in my avatar is from there.
