1 arrow down...so, what are good feathers to flecth with? Damage Pics Included. :)

So....there I was, practicing my form with my newly aquired Bear recurve, when the dog barks, spooks me, I shoot high and WHAM! drill the shed from 10 yards....whoops....

I go check out the damage, and low and behold, my arrow is buried to nearly the nock. I go in the shed only to find that not only does the shed have a new, um, "vent" hole, but my mower bag does too!!

So, my question is, seeing as how now I'm going to reflectch with feathers, which are the best ones to buy? I'm looking for good quality, but not alot of cash. The only feathers I know of are the gateway feathers.

    What do ya'll think?

    Thanks!

    MountainMan

    On to the pics!

Hole in the shed... (sorry honey)

When you buy feathers to re-fletch, don't waste your time with Gateway. Trueflight is the way to go. The feathers on the arrow that penetrated the P&Y shed (LOL) look like 5 inch, parabolic, left wings.

If you need a fletching jig, e-mail me. I have one I'll send you for less than twenty bucks.

Hey, I've done that! Pierced a can of wasp spray through and the arrow stopped about 1/32" from hitting the glass on a 30 gal aquarium I had stored in there. Good times, GOOD times I tell ya!!

Use Truflight feathers. Only way to go. Get them from www.3riversarchery.com along with all your traditional bowhunting needs...

I have used gateway and true flight with about the same results. I guess I use gateway a bit more due to te fact that gander and academy carry them locally. the gateway does need the front enge sanded a bit though if you are shooting a small shelfed bow. When I order feathers and such I mainly deal with Ted Fry ( raptor archery).

How can you tell if they are left wing or right? I think the feathers were 4" but I could be wrong.

What kind of jig do you have?

I do like 3Rivers. I've spent alot of time there already.
Glad to know others have do the same thing.

Will it screw me up if I add an inch to my fletching? I think my feathers are 4". Also, left or right?

            Thanks guys!

LW or RW doesnt really matter as long as you dont mix them on an arrow.
to tell the difference in RW and LW:
look straight down the feather from the back. If the "L" of the base points right, its LW to the left RW.

                Mountain Man:

I'm guesing because the feathers slant downward slightly as they go away from the nock. (with the arrow pointing from the right to the left) Right wing feathers slant upward as they go away from the nock. Also, I'm just guessing the length of the feathers. I shoot 5 1/2 inch high profile feathers, and the ones in the picture look a whole lot smaller than mine.

The fletching jig I have is a Martin, left helical jig.

Is it going to make a huge difference if I go from 4" to 5" feathers?
I'll get some LW helical feathers from 3Rivers, but I don't know if I should stay at 4 or go to 5.

                  Thanks guys!

Arrow stabilization for big broadheads in the main advantage in longer, higher feathers. On the down side, the "SWISH" factor (feather noise) is greatly increased. I have opted for the stabilization since most of my shots are within 25 yards. The extra nsurface area on the larger feathers will slow the arrows down faster, causing the shooting arc to be drastically changed for the worse on shots over 25 yards. Just my 2 cents.....

                      what Tom said
                      bigger feathers are more forgiving.

Do they have to be offset a certain degree or will my AZ EZ 1 degree take care of it?

                        Thanks all.

If you are experienced in refletching Gateway would work but the Trueflights are far more consistent in their bases. My opinion but I did sell arrows for over 20 years. Whichever you chose make sure that your fletcher is properly set up for the best base contact on the shaft. It takes time but once it is done it will stay that way and never change unless you change feather size.
