GPS for the hunt or just iPhone GPS

I am trying to decide if I want to get a GPS for my hunt or just trust the onXmaps Hunt app on my iPhone. They say you can use it when you don't have service but I am nervous to depend on that. If it works, it is way cheaper than buying a GPS and getting the hunt card for it.

Any experience using just your cell phone as GPS with no service?

I've used the phone in the mountains with no service and got decent GPS reception. But it isn't exact. You can also get a standalone bluetooth GPS (Dual is what I have) that you connect your iPhone to and the accuracy is greatly enhanced.

That being said, a Garmin GPS will have longer battery life and you don't have to worry about losing a potential life saving phone call because your battery dies. The accuracy is also going to be better than using an iPhone by itself.

Mine works fine. I use the Trimble GPS Hunt Pro app. With that being said a separate gps unit would be nice so it doesn't run the phone battery down.

I just discovered the Trimble GPS Hunt Pro app and really like it a lot. I'll be using it this year and bringing along a extra battery pack to charge my phone if needed.

Thanks for the help guys. I will look at that app. So it is accurate I am assuming but is it also good without cell service? I am just looking for something that will tell me, "You can hunt here and you cannot hunt here."

That would be another problem with the iPhone internal gps. Your accuracy just isn't as good as a standalone gps especially one with glonass. It's fine if you're not trying to use it to hug the line between public and private but it's tough to trust it entirely.

But yes the iPhone's gps would work even without cell service. Though not as well.

Gpskit worked well up in the mountains and was fairly accurate...just cache your map area and you're good to go

I have both and wouldn't just rely on my iphone app in a remote area. If it's a WMA area that has roads all around it then yea phone app is about all you need.

Of course I don't go anywhere and not have a compas in my pack. And if I can't get a map, I print one.

Also look at the Garmin Fenix or Tactix watches. They sync with your iPhone, have GPS, Altimeter, and magnetic compass. You can upload your maps from Garmin Basecamp to your iPhone and then in the field see your position and plot routes very easily on your iPhone/Android.

Also it is very handy if you do a lot of different types of training. Can also look at the Suunto Ambit3, but its maps are not as good as Garmin's and it is about $130 more.
