    Chestnuts ??

Anyone here know about Chestnuts? What is the difference between Dunstan and American. We have been looking at trying to grow and manage our place for a better sustained natural vegetation for our deer. Do Chestnut trees do well in NE Texas ? How long from planting trees do you see mast production?

I grew some Dunstans from seed a few years ago. They got to three feet and I planted them in the late spring and then proceeded to have a drought and they didn't make it.

Dunstans are a hybrid variety that is supposed to be resistant to the blight that killed off the millions of American Chestnuts in the last two centuries. I have seen some blight resistant American Chestnuts on a couple of other forums and websites.

Dunstans don't get as big as Americans (american chestnuts were the sequoias of the eastern US) but they are supposed to produce mast by year 3-4. I have heard of some even producing a few nuts in the second year.

I have been reading that the Chinese Chestnut trees are blight resistant as well. We are looking at planting in groups of four for early season targets (Sept-Oct. is when they are supposed to drop) bow stands on the outside of food plots.
