    Required reading and other advise

Seems many new folks jumping into photography and asking advise. One piece I will give that Hillary introduced several years ago is the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. This book taught me alot and greatly improved my "pitcher" taking. When I read it I sat down with it, my camera and my camera's manual and methodically went through it. It not only taught me proper exposure methods but also taught me more about my camera though I had read through the camera manual before.

Agreed! I also think it would be good to make every newcomer start out with a Pentax K-1000, and a couple of lenses. Doing that will also give a person a good idea of what this pitcher taking is all about.

I still reference that book sometimes.
It is one of the best, IMO and I think now he has a newer version.

I could also mention that I do like Ken Rockwell's site, but I say that with extreme caution because I have seen some iffy stuff on there. But as far as lens reviews I appreciate his effort.

My daughter is taking an interest in photography. She has the book and my old 50D. I've instructed her to use manual exposure until she can figure it all out.
Unfortunately her high school photography teacher hasn't spent much time teaching exposure settings allowing the kids to just use the auto stuff.

Bryan Peterson has another solid book: learning to see creatively- design, color & composition in photography

              Also,
              Scott Kelby's Digital Photography

I will look into these books pretty soon. I am going to go to the half priced books here in town and see if they have them. But first I need to try and download a manual to my recently acquired camera.

I've read Peterson's book and Scott Kelby's. Enjoyed them both, and recommend them both. I would lean towards Peterson's book. I would also recommend TBH member Russell Graves' (although he's not active) book The KODAK Most Basic Book of Digital Nature Photography
A great beginners guide to outdoor photography. I should re-read it actually.
