    bear black panther

i have my grandpa's old bow. i have shot it as a kid all the way up to my early 20's and have killed with it. its in really good shape and a little short for me. since i cant hunt with Pa any more till the lord calls me home, i would like to take a deer with his bow this year. however, im scared to shoot it. this bow is by far my greatest treasure here on earth. breaking it would break my heart. should i get it out and shoot it or leaving it hanging? i think bear made this bow in the 60's.

I certainly understand why you wouldn't want anything to happen to it but there are people hunting with Bear bows that old and older with no problem. Maybe take it to a trad bowyer and have it checked out?

Yeah, I'd take it in somewhere to have it looked over! If it's in good shape, go for it! If not, it's an heirloom to remember him by (well, it is either way but just not risking damage!)

Derek, anytime you pull a bow back to full draw, there is a certain risk of failure. Even if you have it checked out, and all looks OK, that does not mean that a failure cannot occur.

If the bow is truely your "greatest treasure here on earth"', then I would hang it up on the wall and not shoot it.

But, it would be really neat to take an animal with that bow also, but there would be a risk involved.

Maybe you should ponder on what you think your Grandpa would want and go from there. If you think he would want his bow out in the woods doing what it was meant to do, then go for it. Even if something happened to the bow that would make it unshootable any more, chances are that it would still be able to be displayed and honor your Grandpa!

Personally, I would go for it. My granddad left me his pickup when he passed, and I drive it everyday. There are decent chances that someone will pull out in front of me, but I enjoy knowing that the truck is being used as it was meant to, and I know that's what he would want.
