    Mauser 98 build- DYI sorta

I have always had a strong interest in guns and recently began customizing and working on firearms. I started by building a tacticool ruger 10/22. Then I put together my first AR 15. I then bought a cheap 1911 and changed every part on the gun, it turned out pretty good. I then refinished an old french side-by-side. This will be my first rifle build. I have a great resource in my grandpa who is a semi retired gun smith, but I will hopefully be doing 99% of the work myself.

Purpose: Build an accurate hunting rifle and paper puncher. I hope to build a sub moa gun. I am going to try to keep this under $500.

Caliber: I am going to build a 6.5x55 swede. A swede loaded to modern standards should kill any medium game animal and be good out to 1,000 yards.
The max range for this gun will probably be 600 yards unless I find another range to shoot on.

I started with a donor VZ24 from my grandpa. http://discussions.texasbowhunter.co...1&d=1390874134

After a good cleaning and some polishing.

The 6.5 swede is sweet. My dad has built 2 and they're both great shooters, although they could use a new trigger in my opinion.

All of my families guns are 98 Mausers built by my dad. I have helped on a couple but he is retired and loves to work on them. I have the first one he ever built in 1969 a 1909 Argentine in 7mm Mag. When I got it it wasn't shooting the best but after a new stock, new scope and some new handloads it will put 3 under a quarter all day long. I also have a 25-06 on a 09 action, a 7x57 on an FN action and another one started. Just not sure what its gonna be. I think 500 might be a little under estimated..Depending on the barrel and stock. But then again you have a gunsmith at your disposal so that's half the price right there..

This is not a matching gun. this is a mixture of parts I found in a crate. Ok the next step was to check the lock-up with this bolt. I seemed to have missed a few pics but here goes. I used a sharpie marker to mark the bolt lugs. I put some of this stuff on the lugs and put it in the action.
I read where it is important to not take too much off the lugs because some rifles temper isnt very deep. If you get down to soft metal the lugs can get pushed back which creates all kinds of problems.
After a few quick turns i pulled the bolt out. It had almost 100% lockup so I was happy. It is hard to see

Next thing to do was turn down the bolt.
Then I make my first mistake my mig machine was not working so i welded it up with my arc machine.

What barrel are you putting on it? I have a really nice 96 Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 that's already been sporterized. It needs to be rebarreled, just curious what barrel manufacturer your going to use.

I saw where Sportsmans Guide has Fajen synthetic stocks for this gun at 40 bucks

One of the biggest complaints with the mauser action is the long lock time, so I bought a replacement firing pen. This is half the weight of the original and its made of aluminum instead of the steel.

I knew from the begining that I wanted to replace the trigger. The timmey trigger for the mauser is only $60 so I order and installed one of those.

Now for my mistake. I have been out of practice welding and left a small piece of slag in the weld. When I heated and bent the bolt handle it cracked.

I have a Shilen barrel on order.

I am not sure what stock I want but I will take a look at sportsman's guide.

I have that same firing pen in my .22 CHeetha.
Where did you order the trigger from? I need a new one for my 7x57.

Tinkering with the timney resulted in a nice pull, this is my first experience with a timney trigger and I will be replacing the trigger on my 700 soon.

Here is a comparison between the firing pens.

That's it for now, I am waiting until feb 16th for midwayusa to send the shilen .264 cal #6 contour. I will be cutting the bolt handle off and starting again.

Got the trigger from Midway, I think it was $59.99.

Great thread I've been building a 25-284 for the last year and a half or so on a 98 Mauser.
