    Portable welder/generator question.

I would like to get a decent smaller portable gas powered welder generator. Does anyone have a suggestion on brand/model? Will not be doing real heavy welding, just quarter inch or so metal but want the ability to weld at least 3/8.

What kind of wattage are you looking at for generator?

If your going to spend the money you may as well get one that you can use for several things. Look at a miller bobcat.

I don't how much you will be using it or how often you will be moving it. But look into the Hobart Champion, Lincoln Electric Bulldog, or the Miller Blue Star. They are small enough to be moved around, bout the same size a 5000 Watt or larger generator.

Or look around on craigslist for a Miller Bobcat or Lincoln Electric Ranger.

If you don't mind driving to Dallas give a call to Applied Equipment. They rebuild millions of welders and sell for a good price with a good warranty. I have bought a few machines from them and know many others that have too. The place looks like a graveyard for welding machines. They do amazing work.

I bought the Miller Bobcat. Haven't needed the generator yet but really enjoy the welder. Way better than the Lincoln crackerbox.

Miller Bobcat welded up my tractor sheds and provides power to the weekend cabin.

If you go this route compare the Kohler engine to the Onan(I assume they are both still offered) Its been a few years but it seems like the Onan was quieter.

I got a hobart gas powered one from Tractor Supply 3-4 yrs ago, on sale. I use that thing all the time at home and out at the ranch.

I have a Hobart Champion 4500. It's a 10hp engine with a 4500 watt generator, and 140amp stick welder. I've been able to do pretty much everything I needed with it, from 14ga tubing all the way up to 3/8 plate. For the really heavy plate, you may need to run multiple passes, but it'll do the job.

I bought the bobcat 225 and it has turned into one of those things that will never get sold unless buying another bobcat!
