    Arrow Selection

Hey guys....I anticipate joining the trad gang within the next 48 hrs. (Long story!)

I'll be starting out with a lightweight recurve (40lbs). I've been looking at the Carbon Express Heritage and Gold Tip Traditional XT. My draw length is 28" but I'm not sure how long my arrows are gonna be??? I plan on shooting a 125 gr. screw in point if possible.

I've looked at various arrow selection charts and still can't figure out what to get.

Does anyone shoot the arrows I named above? Any comments?

Can someone guide me to a good starting size? The charts on the Heritage show me to need a 90. But I found stuff on some other forums that said similar setups to me need the 150.

For the Gold Tips, the charts show me right in the middle between the 3555 and 5575.

    Any help would be appreciated.

You might look at 3 Rivers supply, they have test kits you can buy. 6 shafts, 2 each of different sizes.
With trad bows its more tuning your arrow than the bow, get your nocking point and brace height right, then play with the arrow.

I would guess the 90's in the heratiage would be about right. I use the 150's and a 180 grain head for my 55 pound bow so I'm betting they would be to stiff for a 40. Congrats on the new bow and welcome to the Trad side of things

Chew, I shoot a 45# recurve with gold tip trads 35-55. My draw lenght is 28" as well. I bought the arrows full length and bare shaft tuned them, they shot like a dream right out of the box. I suggest getting full lenght arrows and bare shaft tuning. Cut them a 1/4 inch at a time till they fly right. I practice and hunt with these arrows, they are strong and I have taken out some hog shoulders and rocky ground(when I've missed) with no damage at all.

35/55, 600 epics or a longer 500 in like the mfx classic. like it was said above cut them a little at a time until they fly good. I use a 27 1/2" 500 mfx out of my bows and get good flight from 44-52lbs with a 125, though the weight is on the light side at the heavier poundage. they weigh 435.

                Chew..buddy welcome.

I just bought some carbon express 150s yesterday for sureshot in humble. They were for a 40-45 recurve (bear). I bare shafted one with 125 gr tip and flew fine.

                Good luck, come shoot sometime.

                  Chew, forget the charts....

55/75's are WAY too stiff for a 40 lb bow.

I use Gold Tip 35/55's out of several 52-57# recurves and longbows.

BUT.....even they are too stiff with 100-125gr points and cut to my 27 1/2 in draw. I leave em at 30in, and add 100gr brass inserts and....200gr points. They shoot fist size groups, centered, at thirty yards...BARESHAFT..if I do my part that is.

You want yer bareshaft and yer feathered arras to hit the same spot at twenty yards.

longer shafts mean less spine...heavier point weight means less spine. If your arras are hitting to the left the spine is too heavy.

                  troy

oh yeah, welcome to the light......

                        Carbon Vapor 3000s.

The black ones are cheaper, but 'ugly'.

The Caron Woods are more, but look like a 'real' arrow.

Lots of guys in my club (mostly trad shooters) shoot the Carbon Vapors, and everybody who's tried the Carbon Woods has bought some.

I shipped a 'loaner' Carbonwood to a TBH'r in Texas to sample it, and suggested he pass-it-forward to other TBH'rs when he was done.

I just need to remember who it was.

With onestringer wraps and black feathers/nocks the arrows are 'purdy'. 410 grains with a 125 grain tip, killed 3 hogs and a deer in 07 shooting them.

My bow is 47lbs @ 28" and rob lee suggested full length Beman classic 500 arrows with 125 grain tips. The weight is just under 500 grains and this seems to fly pretty well with my set up. Not that i am any good, I just cant blame it on the set up {ha,ha}. Woody
