I was lucky enough to take this old man Friday at about: 4:49 pm. I stating keeping tabs on him back in August when he showed up. I kept checking cameras but he only showed 2 times in August and then disappeared till 3 weeks ago. I got in the blind and waited on Thursday with only a couple of small bucks and does. Friday morning I didn’t hunt having things to do with the family, so I wait on the evening hunt! I climbed into the pop up at 3:15 and waited. A young 10 pt. came in and helped to pass the time, then some does and yearlings. The feeder goes off at 4:32 pm. I watched as the several does and the young 10 came in. Then at 4:37 a 4pt came in from the left and few steps behind him walked the old man. He jumped into the feeder pen and went to work on the corn, but would never give a good shot. At 4:50 he raised his head and looked directly into the pop up and froze. I thought to myself that this hunt was done. He walked to the right side of the pen and jumped the fence and walked slowly off into the mesquite trees. I relaxed back into my seat and thought to myself it was still a great day because of the beautiful afternoon and what all I had seen. Then at 4:55 I noticed movement in the mesquites behind the feeder, I grabbed my range finder and looked and there he was moving slowly back to the feeder. He came back in from the right side and moved to the center of the feeder pen facing me. Once again he looked directly into the popup. I closed my eyes and knew that if he would put his head down and feed, he would have to turn to the right and give me a broad side shot. That is when he made his mistake. I drew as he lowered his head and took a step forward and moved that front leg forward. I touched the release and the arrow flew straight and true. It was a double lung shot and he went about 65 yards. What a great weekend.
