    My Sabinal gift...

So this story starts on a ranch in Sabinal, Tx. A buddy of mine had a dad who was a skeptic to say the least about bowhunting their 2,200 acre gold mine. After four years of talks, a few thrown together brush blinds, and some short blood trails on a few feral hogs, I had convinced them to sell a few archery hunts in October to get rid of a few management deer before the family started rifle hunting in November. As the "consultant" on this project, I set up 9 different bow blinds (carpet ground blinds, pop-ups, tripods, lock-ons, and even one old school 2x4 and 16penny nail gem). Now, these hunts were going to be sold for $2,500, and that priced me out by about $2,400. :-) Not to mention, buying hunts isn't really my thing. I love the challenge and the thrill of a complete DIY hunt. Well, unbeknownst to me, a member of my church knew what I was doing, wanted in on these hunts, and decided that not only was he going to buy all three of the archery hunts, he was going to give one of them to ME. Talk about the FAVOR OF GOD! So in essence, I was really getting to hunt sets that I had put up, filled feeders on, run cameras...the whole bit! Well, to make a long story short, the "check-writer" was going to get first pick of a few bucks, and the best deer available was a large framed eight point. Sadly, his inexperience in judging deer and his sheer desire to shoot something on his last day caused him to tighten the string on a much smaller eight. But he was happy...just not as happy as I was. This meant that I was next in line to go after this guy. So...after four full days of hunting, and passing a few other "hit-listers", I was down to my last morning. I know, I know...we've all watched it on TV and thought, "Yeah right...it ALWAYS happens on the last day!" Well...for me...this time...it really did. The buck came in WAY before shooting light and I had to watch him anxiously for 25 minutes in the dark. At one point, the sounds of a ranch truck from a neighboring ranch almost ruined my day. But after trotting off 70 yds, and then stopping as the sound of the worn out muffler faded, he came in to the feeder for his last kernel of corn. From the top of tripod, naturally camouflaged by a grape vine that has started growing around it for the past three years, nestled under an oak-tree, I came to full draw on my third Pope and Young buck. At 19 yds, the slightly quartering-to shot was hardly a concern of mine. My new Bear Motive 6, shooting my heavy hunting arrow at a chronographed 315, LOVES to blow through shoulder blades. (5/5 on passthroughs since I've had it for three months) With a perfectly placed arrow, that nicked the heart and took out both lungs, this 5 yr. old eight point made it 64 yds before doing the "harlem shake" and then collapsing in the bottom of a dried up creek bed. Emotions were high, and I searched unsuccesfully for someone to high-five. It was just me. So I called my wife, celebrated with her, and then called my buddies dad to deliver the good news at 7:23am....I JUST SMOKED HIM!

A special thanks to Copper87 for putting a little artistic flare to my pic...!
