    Another low # bow Question

Taking my nephew hunting this year. Hes shooting a PSE Rally. The IBO on it is 308.

Currently hes pulling 38lbs at a 21 inch draw length. 430 grain arrow. When I punched the numbers into the Stickem Archery calculator, I got 16.2 ft lbs. I told him he needs to be pulling around 50lbs if he can get there.

I know most charts suggest 35ft lbs of kinetic energy, but have any of you guys had success at any lower FPE? We will be hunting from about a 15ft double ladder stand. Think this is gonna be adequate, or should I have him use my crossbow? I'm really leery of having to track a deer for miles...

I personally think his arrow is way to heavy. Try going lighter but still stiff enough spine to handle his bow and use a COC head. He is pulling enough weight to kill a deer with a 15-20 yrd shot.

I figured the extra weight would be better since I try to get around 500 grains out of my longbow. I'll see what I can come up with tho.

I shoot a 400-430 Finished arrow out of my bow set at 60#. Long bow and Compound two different monsters lol. I would try and build him a lighter arrow and make his FOC a little more above average. Put the weight were it will benefit him the most.

Lighten his arrow weight. I shoot a heavy arrow, 560 grains out of my compound at 70#'s and that is 8 gpp, you nephew is pushing 11 gpp! yes extra weight will help, but that in my opinion is too heavy for 38's.

Arrow to heavy. My son killed his first buck with a bow w/35# 21" draw and about a 320 gr arrow. Keep shot close and make sure it's broadside.

Here is my sons set up from 2010. He was 10 yrs old, 23" draw and 35# bow. 295 gr arrow.

              ]

2011 shooting 40# hoyt kobalt. 24" inch draw 335gr arrow

              2012 PSE Revenge 48# 25.5 draw and 345gr arrow.

Sharp broadhead and arrow placement is the name of the game. I would get 85 slick tricks and some goldtip ultralights or easton 500.

He also got complete pass throughs on all but 2. The fletching hung up on the exit.

He does not need 50 pounds. Nowhere near it. A laid back angle blade coc. Work with em. Teach em to aim low. And he can kill the hell outta one farther than he will be able to shoot....

Planning on having him shoot the magnus 2 blade classics. I may switch and go buy him some stingers, but I have a lot of the classics sitting around.

The main reason I mentioned 50 to him was to try to get him to push himself. I don't live with him, and from what my dad says he hasn't been practicing a lot. I have a 3d target that im gonna make sure he can kill consistently before I get him in a stand. If he can't do that, I figure he can warm the couch. Nothing worse than tracking a poorly shot animal all over creation...

I wouldn't stress poundage nearly as much as a well placed shot. I am slowly getting my brother to the point of killing a deer, and I told him the goal is 40 pounds and perfect shots. Until he gets to that point I take him hunting as much as I can and have him judge every deer that comes in. It really gives the kid an appreciation for hunting

The PSE Radial X-Weave 100's are some really good, tough arrows for light poundage. An old girlfriend shot them and they worked out great.

For whitetails I would drop the weight down to 6-7 grains per pound. It'll still do the trick.
