    Ordered some new shafts...

...CX Mutiny Slashers. Ordered them yesterday. I currently shoot the CX Piledriver Hunters (very heavy arrow). Went through a bunch of calculations and verified on several different speed/KE calculators, and it looks like I can get an extra 30fps while maintaining the same KE through my current setup. I don't have a chrono but would like to find someone in the Austin area that does so that I can see how reality stacks up to theory. I'll post a review of them once they get here and I get them setup and tested. I'm not a speed guy, but I figured if I could get a little extra giddyup and not lose any thump, what the heck.

I love the Piledrivers because they are TOUGH, so I'm a little worried that these lighter arrows won't hold up as well. But we'll find out soon enough and I'll share the review with the GS. If anyone in the Austin area has a chrono and would be willing to shoot a few with me, let me know.

You may keep the same KE, but your momentum will drop with a lighter faster arrow. Maybe not by much. Heck i went 150 grains heavier and increased my KE along with taking my momentum way higher. If I were closer, you could borrow my chrono.

If that happens, then I was thinking I would switch to a 125 gr broadhead to bring the momentum back up. I'll lose a little on the speed but would actually actually pick up some on the KE side, and hopefully on the momentum side. At least that's what I learned in physics class. Please steer me in the right direction if that doesn't make sense.

I personally would not worry about the KE side, I would look at the momentum side of things. Here is what I did and the numbers i got from tinkering. These arrows were weighed on a digital scale and the shots were a 3 shot average thru the chrono.

So when shooting big expandables whether 2 or 3 blade, is it more important to have the KE to open it and carry it thru the animal? Or more important to have the momentum to open it and carry it thru the animal?

Momentum is the ability of the arrow to penetrate. KE is for bullets. You can use either one, but momentum can increase even if KE declines. Look at my chart above.

I get it. Based on the calcs I've done, I can jump to a heavier broadhead with the lighter arrow which will bring my overall weight up, increase my FOC, increase my momentum, keep the KE about the same, but I'll lose a little FPS, which is not a big deal. I'm not a speed freak. Can't be when I only have a 27 inch draw on a 60 pound pull. Thanks for the info Mudslinger. Stilll looking for a chrono in the Austin area to test reality vs. theory, and I'll still put up a review of the shafts.

Yeah I see it I was just courious to which one is more important and it looks like momentum is thanks mudslinger

Looking forward to the review of the arrows.

The CX Mutiny Slashers were delivered this week, along with some neon green zebra Blazers and another 3-pack of Ram Cats. I've really got into building my own arrows so the only thing I had done to the shafts was the cutting (note to self - arrow saw is next purchase). Installed the CX aluminum inserts, wrapped and fletched on Tuesday night. Weighed all my arrows on Thursday. The Slashers were all at 341 grains, +/- 2 grains. So I think I did pretty good getting them setup. I weighed all of my Piledrivers and they were 440 +/- 6 grains. All of the Piledrivers had the inserts installed when I bought them. I also started weighing all of my tips (practice and BH's). in case you didn't know, practice tip weights vary more than I would expect. A brand new box of Trophy ridge practice tips weighed between 101 and 97 grains. I was a little surprised at the variance. Anyway, back to the arrows....

Took about 10 practice shots just to get a feel where the Slashers were hitting compared to the PD's. Then I shot 4 three arrow groups. Two with the PD's and two with the Slashers.

First of all, you can really hear the difference in speed! 100 grains in mass makes a big difference. Second, my bow sounded REALLY loud when shooting the lighter arrow. Much more than I expected. I've pretty much always shot a 400-450 grain arrow. This is my first attempt at speed, so I was a surprised that there was a big noticeable difference.

As for grouping, I was stacking them from the get go. Really happy with the trajectory and the flight. I did not change my sights. On the pics below, I was putting the 20 pin dead center at 21 yards. Notice the PD's are just at the bottom of the bull (which is how I have my sights set). The Slashers hit about 3 inches higher and just a tad right of center.

Shot on Thursday with a little bit of a breeze and was able to observe the drift difference with the lighter vs. the heavier arrows.

I do like the Slashers. They seem to be pretty durable, the arrow weights were very consistent, they look pretty dressed in neon green/black and they be fast. BUT, I think I'll be hunting with the PD's. The groupings are just as close despite a larger variance in weights, but they don't drift nearly as much as the lighter arrows in a crosswind. Plus, my bow is WAY quieter shooting the heavier arrows and the heavier arrows are delivered with more momentum as evidenced with the target penetration.

All in all, I like both of these CX arrows.

                      Same groups, different angle.

I'm in Canyon lake if you want to crono your bow still. Also Cabelas has a crony.
