I haven't posed on the Traditional forum in quite a while but rest assured that it hasn't been because my passion for Trad has been diminished or lost. I am still just as interested in one day getting that first trad kill under my belt.
In January, I joined a JOAD club with my grandson and their styles of shooting are varied and different than what I was taught by mike Javi Cooper. After many months of attempting to shoot "instinctive," I have come to the conclusion that I have no instincts.
I shoot a bow named, Eagle. It's a 40# Samick Sage, 62" recurve.
Last night, I was reading the "sticky" by Draco and his gap shooting method. Now, before I go further, I want to confess that I had a little bit of a lazy streak when it came to making the target Draco described. Of course, how can one tell where the arrows are really ending up if one doesn't have a place to aim and see the result of that aim.
To make a long story short, I made the target like Draco described and set it up 10 yards away, just like he described. I must say that I could not see the actual point of my arrow but when I close my left eye (I shoot right handed), all I could see is the end of my shaft. Oh, I also using three under and about one finger width below the knock to get the shaft up closer to my eye.
Well my shots were point on every time but 4 inches right. I started to put the point of the shaft 4 inches to the left of center an voila' I start hitting close to center - not every time of course, but close ... closer than I have ever been. OK. So I try15 yards and I'm 4 inches low and to the right. I adjust to four inches high and to the left and I start hitting close to center.
QUESTION: Why am I shooting right? My bow is vertical. I did notice that when I re-read Draco's article, his head appears to be a little canted into the arrow. I was not doing that. I tried that with shooting at the center the next go round and it made no difference: Impact is still 4 inches to the right at 10 an 15 yards. When I correct/adjust to 4 inches left, I hit close to center.
What might I be doing wrong? Thanks for any suggestions.
