    South Texas Management 8

    Here is story.. Krivoman Outdoors

Well, I have had a pretty good December. I am very fortunate to have a buddy who owns 10000 acres in the George West area. I have hunted on this ranch for the last 3 years killing management deer for him. This year would be know different accept that the management deer I would be hunting would be larger than normal due to some horse trading with my blinds.

Well we kit the ranch the first week of December. This has historically been when the better bucks start being seen in daytime, but not on does yet. The first couple hunts yielded plenty of bucks, just not the target deer I was hoping for. The Landowner had seen a couple of management deer at a tripod stand that he wanted gone from the ranch. Well for those of you that know me, I don't necessarily fit in a tripod, but said what the heck, I will give it a try. The hunt was going great. Lots of deer at feeder. Then one of the target deer showed. Well it was a chore to get the deer in the right place and me the nerve to draw with 30 sets of eyes on me. When the buck was quartering a way, I was just waiting for the front leg to move forward. Well he moved it as to step forward. So I came to full draw. I could not believe no one saw me. Only problem is the buck never moved the leg forward. So I am holding, and holding, and holding. I tell myself to let down and start over. Well I slowly start the let down process when the deer moves his leg forward. Well I decided to just grunt it back to full draw. So now I am holding for over 35-40 seconds...

Now I will openly admit that I did not lock the pen onto one spot. I kinda got where I wanted and let it fly. Well my outcome represents that decision. I knew immediately the shot was back.

When the buck ran out, I watched as far as I could from the tripods but could not see where exactly he went.. Well as the case with most south Texas settings the deer around have no clue what happened, just that everyone started running. So They started filtering back in almost within seconds. I was watching the deer come by the last spot my deer ran. They were staring into the brush where I last saw him. They would then get spooked and run off. So I had a feeling my deer was standing over there.

I text the landowner that I made a poor shot and not to drive in as the buck ran strait up the road they would have to drive in on. Told them I was in for a long day and I would just sit here. During the next hour I had several deer try to come up the road. Only to stop in the same spot and stair into the brush, then do a circle around the brush, then come in. After 3 hours I decide to get down and at least look at the arrow.

The arrow was not as bad as I had though. I was thinking gut. The arrow was solid red from tip to tip, so I know this showed Liver. I decided to follow the running tracks up the road slowly to see if I could see him in the brush where the other deer were looking. Well sure enough, he did not make it 40 yards. It had been over 3 hours since the shot but he was not stiff at all. So I knew he was probably alive for a couple hours, so staying in the tripod the whole time and telling landowner not to come in really paid off.

I called the my buddy Q who was with the landowner and told them the deer is dead and to come get me. It was a huge relief to find him where I did...

He is the Video of the hunt and recovery. I make no claims to a great shot. But dead is dead I guess..
