Well, I needed to get a little work done on my #1 longbow and so I jumped in the car and headed to the Sarrels Archery shop yesterday. As most of you know I LOVE my Blueridge longbow and, after a splinter came up in the fiberglass in my upper limb last year, I ended up wrapping it with sinew just to make sure it did not get any worse. I am also prety hard on my equipment and my riser was getting pretty ugly looking too (this bow was so rough looking I am almost embarrassed to show it to people and tell them to go get one from Bob).
Anyway, I had another set of carbon limbs that fit another riser which I did not like the feel of. My project for the day: to somehow make those carbon limbs fit on my #1 riser.
I got to Bob's and told him what I wanted to do. He scratched his head and said "OK.....but.....you might just end up with a set of trash limbs if this does not work". I said I was prepared for that outcome but really wanted to try it.
Bob walked me through everything we needed to do and, in the end, it all came out great. The "new" limbs fit great on the old riser (with a bit of sanding, scraping, and drilling!) and with just a little shooting I cannot tell the difference between my old limbs and the new ones.
Back to my ugly riser. Bob pointed out again that my riser was pretty bad and asked if I wanted him to refinish it. I told him that I wanted to refinish it myself using Tru-Oil gunstock finish. Well, he said OK and handed me a sander and said to get to work. I did and left his house with a beautifully sanded riser waiting to be refinished. I just put my first coat of Tru-Oil on about 30 minutes ago and it already looks like a brand new riser again. I can tell it is going to look AWESOME after about 6 or 8 coats of the Tru-Oil.
Before I left Bob's yesterday, he gave me some more news (great for him cause I ordered a new Mongol composite bow, sad for my pocket book). Bob is have a Christmas sale. and offering 25% off all bows!
So, like I said above, I just put the first coat of finish on a bit ago and it will take me all day to get it to the last coat. I will come back and post pics of the completed project when it is done. I'm pretty excited though because it already looks like brand new again!
