    fletching

What length feather do most shoot and why? I was noticing when you buy arrows from online store most are 5" feathers(the ones pre made not the ones you chose the feather).
This was just a observation. I have 4" feathers and dont know why just what I have. Help me under stand the difference besides the lenght.

Bigger fletchings tend to control a large broadhead better - at the cost of some reduction in speed. I shoot 5" shild cut because , well I don't have a good reason . They look cool though!

In theory, if your arrows are perfectly tuned AND you as an archer never made any mistakes, then no fletching would be needed.

As it is almost nobody has the perfectly tuned arrow and NOBODY NEVER makes mistakes.

The feathers are there to help stabilize the arrow and help correct our mistakes. That being said, the better your form and more well tuned your arrow is, the less fletching you NEED.

That is why I suggested on the other thread that you look at getting 5" feathers on whichever arrows you end up getting. The bigger feathers will help you out as you are learning form and consistency.

I shoot arrows with a high Front of Center (I use heavy inserts and points) and have fairly good form and release. I used to use 5" feathers but now shoot 4"

That clears it up for me. Longer feathers are more forgiving so I shoot a 30" arrow so I need to find me some 29" feathers. I am going to order my son and I some arrows with 5" feathers instead 4"

For hunting, try 4 x 4" parabolics on 90 Degrees. You will be amazed how quiet these are and with about the same surface area as 3 x 5 1/2". Very forgiving, too.
