    Changing Broadheads

I thinking about changing my broadheads.

This is the first year I have hunted with a bow, dad and I got ours at the same time, we both shoot a PSE, both shooting around 260 fps.

We had NAP thunderheads recommended to us by a friend, I havent had the oppurtunity to shoot yet, but dad shot a doe last weekend and although the shot placement could have been a little better, he shot her high, he didnt get much penetration, which was evedent by a very small blood trail, which was 4 or 5 drops every 3 feet or so, we tracked her for 400 yards and eventually ran out of blood.

There isnt much more upsets me than being unable to find a deer thats been hit.

The point I'm getting at is I dont have much confidence in these thunderheads anymore.

I have watched countless videos and reviews, and I've pretty much narowed it down to grim reaper whitetails or slick trick fixed.

Wanted to get some opinions on using a grim on a bow that's shooting around 260 fps with about 51 KE.

    Thanks

With your set up, I would go with the Slick Tricks.

Thunderheads are good broadheads. Lots of deer killed with those. If you have some I wouldn't give up on them yet. I haven't shot them in years but had a lot of success with them when I did.

Thanks for the quick replies, I am tempted to still use the thunderheads, but I've always been told to be 100% confident in my abilities and equipment, to assure the best shot placement.

My thoughts are, shooting a fixed would be best when you dont have a pass through, at the same time, those repears do amazing things when they create an exit wound.

I'm just not sure how consistently I will be getting pass thoughs at 260 fps.

If you hit em behind the shoulder it will be like a knife through hot butter. 260 is plenty fast.

Do not blame the broadhead for a less than perfect shot. I doubt the outcome would have been any different with any other head, except for maybe an very wide cutting mechanical and then without the arrow weight, the right momentum and KE, that would not have worked either. Plan on making the shot placement better and do not worry about switching BH's. Thunderheads are still a very good BH.

I shoot Muzzy but I've heard more good stuff about the Slick Tricks on here than any other BH.

I probably could have worded that better, I certainly would not blame a broadhead for a poor shot, I was refering to the mental aspect of hunting in regards of being confident in your equipment, as in having one less thing to worry about when I release that arrow.

I have hunted with Thunderheads for the past 14 years, and never had any issue with them. Always found animals that I shot. I did pick up a pack of Slick Trick Mags this season to go along with the Thunderheads. Shot a pig last weekend with a Slick Trick and I had an unbelievable blood trail. It was very easy tracking.

The deer could still be walking around our there. Years ago, I made a solid shoulder hit in a cull buck and only got about 4" of penetration. A couple of weeks later, he showed back up and I made a better shot and put him down. As for the first shot, it was a scab that was healing.

Another many years ago, hit high in backstrap area and got some blood, but no deer. Same as first, he showed back up in good health, but didn't take him as he had broken one side of horns off.

My wife shoots 45lbs 25"DL and has shot several animals with the 100gr. Thunderheads and even had passthrough on double lung shots. I'm thinking it was more the arrow hitting bone real hard at angle and not pushing through or animal spun real hard absorbing some of the impact.

Any BH will work well on Deer and other thin skinned game. As others have stated placement is King and sharpness is a close second. Make sure to tune your bh and bow so you will be sure of your shot placement. On deer aim low. Do a search on this sight or YouTube for deer jumping the string. Having faith (confidence) in your ablitity to make the shot is key. Once you have made a good shot then you can judge the performance of your broadhead. 260 fps is more than enough speed and energy to get pass throughs on any decently placed shot with any sharp bh.
