    Let's talk flashes

So I bought a new canon 7d but have been having a hard time taking good pics of my daughter ad her other kid friends in low light without using the built in flash...and I don't like that look. Looking to buy a flash I can bounce light with, and or use as a slave flash. Would like to not spend $300 either. Any recommendations?

Will be watching this. I have a 60D. Love the pictures without the internal flash, with them they look like a very cheap point and shoot. Definitely need something better

I shoot Nikon, so I'm not familiar with Canon speedlights. But if you want one with enough power and bounce/off camera capabilities, be prepared to spend at least $300. You can find great deals on used gear on Craigslist.

Just curious, have you set your camera to high ISO with low light setting also changing the WB for the proper lighting. Most times indoors, I don't even use a flash, but by changing the settings get great images of my grandkids on other people.

I have changed the iso, but they get grainy at high ISO. I have not tinkered with the WB. I'll have to try to learn more about that feature.

Do you try to keep ISO below a certain number? I have usually had best success by lengthening the time the shutter is open, but kids don't sit still very long so that gets messed up most of the time.

What software do you use to process your photos? Most include a noise reduction process. Some are better than others. I use Lightroom 3 with great results.

                    Brett,
This is a great flash for the money. I recently picked on up. You'll love it.

Photography is all about light. You can battle low light or learn to use a flash. There is a time and a place for both.

Thanks Casey! I am going to look into it.

I also need to learn to procEss my pIcs as I haven't gotten into that yet. It's all straight from the camera for me right now.

The last external flash I had was a Sunpak 555. It mounted on an arm, and I had an external battery pack for it. I could take rapid fire pictures across a gymnasium easily with it.

It's now long since discontinued, but they still make great stuff:
