    My Christmas eve buck

The night before I shot this buck I took a doe out of this stand and I had asked my daughter if she wanted to hunt that stand again to take another doe that morning. She said no if all I was seeing was young bucks and doe’s at the stand she would just sleep in and I could go get me another doe.
Since I still need to take 4 more doe’s I left that morning which was Christmas eve morning and went to the stand I had been seeing Doe’s in. Sure enough the decent size doe I had seen the night before with the doe I had shot came in and she had a younger doe with her. I had about 7 young bucks and one 8 point that was about 4 ½ years old eating at the feeder when the doe’s made it in. I moved my camera to get the shot of the doe’s and started getting in position to take a shot when out of the corner of my eye I saw this 10 point walk up I quickly repositioned the camera to him and after a few seconds I made the decision that I wanted to take this deer. He walked up to the feeder and started eating corn. However because of a young buck directly behind him I did not have a clear shot and I owed it to this buck to make the best possible shot I could and I did not want to take a risky shot. He started making his way over by the doe’s and they moved away out of my sight. At that point I thought then I guess I had just made a mistake and let him walk away. I sat there in the stand for about 15 minutes and the two doe’s and the 10 point were no were to be seen. Then all of a sudden the two doe’s came up again on my right side so my attention went back to them. Again I moved the camera to make sure they were in field of view of the camera and reached down and placed my release on the D-loop and started to raise the bow when over my left shoulder I noticed my 10 point walking in and he was already at 20 yards. I decided I need to reposition myself and the camera to make the shot. By the time I had the camera on him and was l was looking back at him again I did not have a shot do to the deer feeder and a young buck in front of him. He slowly would take a few bites of corn and move just a little. When he had cleared the two young bucks in front of the feeder he was no longer broad side of me anymore and I had made my mine up I only wanted a double lung shot and I would not take anything less. So again I waited slowly he moved and gave me the broad side shot. I looked at the camera just really quickly and decided I thought it was positioned in his area and I was wishing he was because I did not want to take anymore time repositioning the camera. I drew back and placed my 20 yard pin just behind his shoulder and released the arrow. I watched the Nocturnal knock go straight through the deer right behind the shoulder. Deer scattered everywhere but I watched my buck run to my right and go behind a tree where I could no longer see. I knew I had a great shot and I could see the red Nocturnal knock sticking in some brush about 30 yards away. I could not stand it and I instantly ran over to the arrow to inspect it and found it covered in bright red blood. I looked on the ground were the buck had been standing and I could see where blood had shot out the side of where the arrow had exited him. Feeling very sure of my shot I looked in the direction the 10 point ran and I could not see a drop of blood on the ground. I finally found one drop about 5ft from the placement of the shot. I was starting to get worried and I could not find any more blood. So I decided to walk up to the tree where I had seen the 10 point run around which was about 10 yards in front of me and look. When I got there I saw nothing on the ground, not one drop of blood. Mind you it has been less than 5 minutes from the time of the shot but I knew I made a great shot and every deer I have taken with a double lung usually drop in the first 50 yards and I knew this was a dead deer. I walked in a straight line away from the tree in the direction the buck had been running and I walked about 20 yards. Then I stopped and looked back and started second guessing everything. When I looked back in the direction of my feeder I saw my buck lying on the ground. There was a brush pile right next to that tree and he was on the back side of it, I had walked passed my buck and he had only made it less than 30 yards from the stand. When I walked up to my buck this was exactly how he fell and was in a perfect pose for a photo. By now it was 7:30 in the morning and I knew my daughter was still asleep in the camper but I would need a little help loading him into the ranger and besides I need to show her why she does not need to sleep in. So I drove back to camp and woke her up. I told her that I needed her help. She quickly said for what. She said I know not for tracking because your deer never go far. I told her no but she need to come see the deer I just shot. She quickly knew something was wrong and started asking questions. Like did you shoot a buck? How big? Why want you answer my questions. I just told her she would see soon enough and to bring her camera. When we pulled up to him I asked her if she was mad because I shot this buck and she said no. Then she said every time I sleep in this happens and the next time she wants to sleep in I have to sleep in also. She took this photo of my buck. This is my biggest bow buck ever.
When I got back to camp I wanted to review the footage on the camera and found that he was not view of the camera at all and the only this I got was you could see me draw back and all the other deer running away. But I have my buck and in 12 months he will be home on my wall.
By the way my daughter has already picked what wall he will be on and what color the wall needs to be panted before he gets home.
