Postcard Youth Hunts at Nannie Stringfellow WMA

If any of you folks put your kids in for the postcard hunts at Nannie Stringfellow WMA, check your E-mail. They have drawn. My youngest son was picked for the spike and doe hunt Oct 15-16.

I'm guessing the Justin Hurst youth hunt was drawn at the same time. From what one of the guys at the WMA told me, they try to spread the hunts in this area around to all the yoots that are put in. If your son was picked for Nannie Stringfellow, my guess it's unlikely to get drawn for Justin Hurst too.

My son was drawn 8th spot for the Stringfellow hunt on Oct 1-2. Last year, I think they had plenty of spots left for standbys. He also got drawn for the Womack Ranch hunt through Texas Youth Hunting.com. I need to clean out the freezer.

I talked to marc at NSWMA today they have done all the drawings for the youth hunts. He said that on some of the later hunts it may be a few days before contact is made.

                Nannie or Stringfellow?

When it rains it pours my girls won the hunt for Nannie and Richland Chambers youth hunt on the same weekend (Dec 3-4). We have been to Richland chambers in the past.

Which one has the best odds of seeing game?

                      Stringfellow WMA Report / Soapbox

My son and I hunted Stringfellow Oct 1 & 2, rifle hunt. Saw lots of deer but way out of range. We passed on an 8 point that was border line 13" inside spread at about 60 yrds. got some good video. We were unable to take any shooters. does or bucks

                      Soapbox for a minute.

Stringfellow is trying to let some of the smaller bucks get bigger. That is where the 13" inside spread rule comes in. Mark Ealy specifically spoke about this. Let it walk if you don't think it'll make it or it's marginal. I assumed that everyone would follow these guidelines. When we got to the cleaning house there sure looked to be a few too many smallies. The problem is that there are no consequences for shooting something to small ( or young) @ WMA The supervising adult says shoot ot don't shoot. . A game warden catches you with a buck not wide enough in Brazoria county and you'll get a ticket. So why not on the Stringfellow.

It was real hard for me to rationalize to my son why we let a nice marginal width 8 walk, when there were some smaller than that at the cleaning house. Needless to say he was disappointed. When your 11 ,Sometimes it is really hard to understand doing the right thing and following the rules . Hell even when your 46. Life lesson.

Stringfellow needs to implement some consequences for the adults decisions and maybe they'll start letting some of these young bucks grow up.

                      Just my 2 cents

                        Read my mind!

I agree completely with your post as my youngest and I were also on that hunt and we passed up a few questionable deer as well.

It seemed to us that as long as you were Mark's buddy, it was okay to shoot a small buck. The first day, I saw a few deer hanging that I would never have let my son shoot hanging in the cleaning shed.

By contrast, I hunted with my son on the Justin Hurst WMA this past weekend and the manager at that facility told the adults that they were completely responsible if their youth shot an illegal deer and that the adult would have to answer to the game warden.

No illegal deer were killed at the Justin Hurst WMA either weekend and every group was treated exactly the same.

I know from the people that I talked with that we are not the only two that saw things the same way at the Nannie Stringfellow WMA.

My boy doesn't mess around! We got in the blind about 1:00 and he had his first deer on the ground by 3:30.

As far as Marc playing favorites, I haven't seen it. Marc and Earnest have always been professional when I was around.

tx4good, Did your youth get a deer @ Justin Hurst? We were going to go as standby, but at the last minute changed our plans. how many standbys showed and how many did they take?

palehorse was that deer from stringfellow or hurst?

I don't know about the favorites, but if stringfellow wants to grow some bigger deer, they'll have to do what hurst seems to be doing based on tx4good's post. I thought I was the only one that saw it that way. sorry your youth didn't get one, but it's good to know I wasn't seeing things...
