Well, I went to a new stand yesterday and the camera cards had only been showing 3 little pigs and a sow, so I didn't expect much until right before dark. After about 45 minutes I catch movement at 7:45 across the slough. He stands motionless for a while and finally starts slipping in. He was real nervous and it didn't help things when I shifted my weight and the stand made some noise. He got behind a tree and stayed forever. When he finally came out from the tree,I felt rushed because the camera was running out of light and I didn't want to reach for the Night Shot switch and make some more noise. I took the shot with him slightly quartering away and hit him higher than I wanted to. I gave him some time and followed a good blood trail into some thick canes about 60 yards. I could hear him grunting and breathing heavily so I held my position for a while. I could see my nocturnal nock moving back and forth about 25 steps in front of me. I finally slipped up close enough to see him. He was facing me with his backside up against some thick canes. I didn't have my bow and thought about going back for it but a rear shot wasn't possible. He was having trouble breathing and wasn't trying to move, so I backed out and gave him some time. When I came back he had expired. Looking back, I should have waited for a more quartering away shot.
