    Need new camera advise...

…I have a Canon PowerShot something-or-other that I have had for many years. I am comfortable using it and overall, I am pleased with the picture quality…any lack thereof may be attributed to the operator. I will be traveling abroad in April and then again with my bride in late May and was considering an upgrade. I would hate to not be able to recreate my trips with pictures due to a sub-par camera. I DO NOT want a professional style camera due to 1) the learning curve before my trip(s) and 2) the size and easy of carrying it around.

Is there a “semi-professional” point and shoot that won’t break the bank OR in the realm of point and shoots, are they all about the same in quality with a few extra bells and whistles?

    Thanks in advance.

These are pretty good cameras for the money but for not much more you could get a entry level dslr and if you want to spend less than that you could then get a point and shoot that will slip in your pocket. They are coming out with so much that as soon as you think you have found one you like they come out with something else.

Check out the Canon G11. I bought my mom one if its predecessors, the G9, and have been very impressed with it. You can use it like a point and shoot on full auto. But it has some nice features in case you want to advance. Check the reviews.

The canon powershot SX20IS is nice. I have the previous version, SX10IS and like it.

I think I may have narrowed it down to the one you recommended and the Nikon mentioned above. Thanks again fellas.

As a Nikon DSLR shooter, I can honestly say that Canon makes a better point and shoot than Nikon. The G11 is a great camera. I hope to replace my Canon Powershot s230 with one. The little Canon just has to crap out first though.

Kevin, check out the Canon SX20 IS. It is an upraded verson of the S5 IS that I have, and it is a nice camera...more than a simple point & shoot, but less (and smaller) than a SLR. It has a 20x zoom lense which is nice for those shots where you want to get close. I really like my S5 IS and wish I had the newer version. I will email you our pictures of your destination that I took with it.

Berandel - After speaking with a buddy last night, receiving his advice/comments along with your recommendation and the others above, I think this may just be the one. I left my bride a "hint" before leaving for work this morning.

Thanks again for all the suggestions fellas!

Not trying to hijack here, but I have been looking for something along these same lines. Which in your opinion is the better camera and provides the most options? Thanks!

Both cameras are feature packed. The G11 has 5x zoom and the SX20 has 20x. That's what tipped my choice between the SX10 and the G-series.

The G11 will allow you to shoot RAW out of the box. But, if you're really wanting to shoot RAW, then you could do that with the SX20 by loading the CHDK firmware when it comes out (it's in beta now).
