Fort Hood 2006, hows the hunting?

I've see threads on type two land, national forest/grasslands etc., but never one on the unique public land around fort hood. Just wandering how everyone is doing out there this year.

I have hunted there three times this season. I need to get back down there soon. I hunted twice in October. On the first hunt, I saw a dozen doe out of bow range and a pretty wide buck. Looked like a ten pt but hard to tell. Had an encounter with a really big buck before first light. He stood under my stand for what seemed like an eternity. Biggest buck I've ever seen in person. I could make out his antlers and could barely make out his body, but it was well before shooting light. He slipped off, and I never saw him again once it got light. The last hunt was middle of November. The deer were moving all day...pre-rut maybe? Saw probably ten doe and five bucks, again all out of range.

I hunt there all the time...things have been really slow there for several reasons...drought, acorns (plenty of them) and the hot weather...everyone is still afraid to shoot a buck unless it's a real bruiser...6 have been confiscated so far for not being exactly 13" inside spread, and tickets were issued in all cases, so there are several areas that are still buck/doe...but not much has been killed lately...maybe this front coming in today will change that...only time will tell...the hogs have been active, but not during the day...for more info, go to www.forthoodhunting.com weekly openings and harvest info is on this site.

The hunting has been pretty slow. I've seen a few, but nothing to write home about.

I saw a picture at the Harker Heights Walmart of an eleven point buck taken off Ft Hood in Nov.It had good mass and plenty wide.No details on whether it was a gun or bow kill or what area it was taken in.I do believe I'm gonna try hunting there next year, you can't beat the price.

Its been said on here before the game station guys said they had some 160's come from up north in the base. Is this the deer your talking about?

No,that's a different deer.It was an older man that killed it and it was taken in November.I did originally post that pic to though.

The deer, and some big ones at that, are obviously there. I guess there might be a few more of us there next year...

Yea..I'll be there too. Whitney didn't show me much this year by way of Trophy deer. I had scouted Ft Hood last year and found some sheds that peeked my interest but I concentrated on Whitney cause it was closer and seemed to have potential. For sure I'll invest a couple of long weekends at Hood this year. There is a campground next to Killeen and I'll just park the RV and stay the weekend maybe fish Belton lake too.

No,I think that's still a different one,and in that case things are really looking up for hunting Hood this year, especially since it's a 15 minute drive from the house.

                          Lots of Deer on Hood

I have bowhunted several times on Hood this year. Always saw lots of deer. Never got a good shot at a buck so finally took a doe at the end of the season. Hood deer do tend to run on the small side. I hunt the area around the ammo supply point so I never have to compete with the gun hunters.

As always, not being able to put out feeders makes for a challenging hunt.
