    An Honest 1St Point Review

My son was lucky enough to get draw for an LSBA Youth hunt conducted at 1st Point. I have always thought of myself as an honest person, so I thought I would post a review.

1st-this is not a canned hunt on a small high fenced property with animals let out 200 yards from you. These are live, low fenced S Texas WTD.
2nd these deer have been bow hunted hard for 8 years and are very savy.
3rd there are big deer on the place-I saw a 140" class buck
4th Nancy and Mike Palmer are quality folks who will treat you right.

We arrived on Friday around lunch and hunted Fri afternoon through Sunday morning. We saw a few deer in the evenings, but nothing in the mornings. They make a corn run down the roads in the late afternoon, and we saw deer after the corn truck went by. We saw several does, two small bucks, one 120" class 9pt, and a solid 140's buck that stayed in the brush. These deer are well educated and blind shy. I thought we had our blind brushed in well, but the deer could spot it easily.

My advice on 1st Point is this-if you go-go for several days. A 2 day hunt is just not enough to make something happen unless you are very lucky. Get off the road at least 20 yards and construct some sort of natural blind. Several of the guys who hunted while we were there dug pits and had more success seeing deer than we did.

Make friends with Mike Palmer immediately and listen to what he has to say. He has hunted down there for years and knows the property and where the deer are. Don't hesitate to ask him questions, and heed his advice as I don't believe he will steer you wrong. Don't hunt intersections of the roads. The big bucks are educated and seem to know these are danger points. We had set up at an intersection. The big buck we saw walked about 40yards down from the interesction in the brush, stood and looked down the road both ways, crossed the road and did the same thing. He eventually looked towards our blind, picked us out, and slipped back in the brush. I might of had a shot with a rifle if I was quick, but not with a bow.

We were kind of in a hurry as this was a short hunt and we did not spend a lot of time scouting, we simply arrived, got our assigned pasture and went and threw up two blinds. If I were going to go back I would spend more time checking the pasture for trails, and tracks.

If you go it will not be an easy hunt-but I believe it is a doable hunt. 1st Point is in the right area of Texas Geographically to have great genetics. There are definately big deer there, and prices are very reasonable for the area you will be hunting. If you are looking for a chip shot-this is not the place. If you are looking for a reasonably priced hunt, where you have an opportunity to take a P&Y class animal I think this is the place if you do your homework.

I failed to mention the accomidations. The cabins consist of two trailer houses with seperate bunk rooms and a common kitchen. Each bunk room has it's own bathroom with shower and toilet. The bunk rooms had 2 sets of bunks each. They had BBQ pits outside for cooking, as well as a stove/oven in the kitchen. Large porch runs in front of the two trailers and there is a fire pit for sitting around and swapping stories. Cabins were adequate. This is not a 5star hotel-but I was there to hunt, not lounge at the Lodge. Bring bedding, towels and toiletries. There was a window AC in each room, so for an October hunt the rooms stayed nice and cool. The hum of the AC's kept our room mates from being disturbed by my deep baratone snoring.
