How do you make your feeder raccoon proof. I made a home made 55gallon protein feeder, but can't keep the raccoons from eating all of my protein. What can I do to keep them from eating all of my protein???

Shoot/trap them. There are only so many in the area. I hear Smart is for hire.

Trap and kill them! PVC on the legs of your feeder or carpet Tack strip up the legs or vaseline on the poles.

Glue carpt tack strips on the feeder legs. Seems to work pretty well.

The tack strip would be a great idea. I think I can do that. The PVC on the legs: how long should be the pieces be and how do you attach them to the legs?

Use longer legs, fasten them to the top ring on the drum. This will add stability & create a distance to far from the feeder head for them to get to. Turn game cam to video & watch the circus :D:D

You cut the pvc about 3 ft long, put a bolt in near the bottom of the leg for the pvc to ride on and then when the coons try and climb it spins.

This is how I take care of them, but you have to keep the pressure on them or they will take it over.

Trap them, they learn how to get around all the electric and other coon proof items. Get them now before you have 10x that many after the spring hatch!

Like Damonj said... use a solar powered fence charger. run wires down each leg and make that whole thing "HOT" When A coon touches that...ZAP!!!!!

That is when you want your trailcam on video mode.

I tried the carpet tack trick... Like someone else posted above, that stuff just gave them more traction. We have started to feed our coons "Monkey Chow" and it has reduce the population in 4 weeks from 10+ coons per feeder to a total of 3 from trail cams on 8 feeders. We're gonna feed them with their own little protein feeders until there's no more coons left to eat the stuff...

I will grease the legs with bearing grease. You have to put a lot of it on and make sure you go all the way up the leg and around the pipe. The only problem is you have to make sure they stay greased.

the monkey chow is food sold for monkeys at the local feed stores... we heard from some South Texas boys that they started feeding it, and it "plugs" the coons up and kills 'em. don't know if it actually kills 'em, but we tried it with some fed from 5 gallon buckets with holes cut in the side of the bucket, and they wiped it out in a couple days, but then we saw almost no more coons on our cameras after about 4 or 5 days... We're gonna feed it this summer and see how the long term effects are on the little buggers, but the initial results were pretty impressive. We did NOT however actually find any dead coons.

SS does it affect other animals ie deer, squirrels....? I wouldn't mind hangin' some in a tree to send my remaining coons to their maker and that sounds like a heckuva way to get the ball rolling..

That's the good part about this stuff according to what we've been told and what we've read... It does not affect other animals, nor does it have any by-kill for any animal eating a dead coon... it's not a poison. It simply shuts down their digestive tract and they can't poop. the just plug up and quit eating. Like I said, we haven't found any dead coons, but they sure quit comin' around our feeders.

I have just started to get coons on trail cams and I can make something like this. Good idea right there.

I also have my feeder legs at the top and so far no coons have been able to get to the varmit cage and spin out any corn.

Monkey Chow only messes with the coons. We have been using it for about 3 years now. Works great. They don't come back. Go to your Purina dealer and tell them you want some "monkey chow". We just put it in the litttle brown paper sacks, ones like they give you at a convience store for your two-story beers, and sat 2-3 sacks out around the feeders. As stated above, not sure what happens to them cause we have never found a dead either but they don't come back is the main thing. It won't be long before we get a reply about feeding monkeys in S. Texas and we don't know what we are talking about but it works.

I have heard that "monkey chow" will do the same to hogs, have you looked into that?

TTT for Dog. Dog, your mission if you choose to accept it is to make enough of these to catch every coon on the Junco and in San Angelo. Follow the link. You supply the traps, I'll supply the .17

I've had good success with some metal cones I made out of sheeting material. Attached to each of the 3 legs via 4 L-brackets and some pipe banding material. Unlike the metal cages on some feeders it doesn't interfer with the thrown corn.

Those things are just like the "rat guard" used on dock lines of ships that tie up at the pier down at the port... pretty good idea that I might have to try.
