We are back and forth on killing this deer. He is a good 8 with dent main beams. Im afraid though he may not progress much from here.

Thoughts on age?

I'm no expert but I'm going to say 4.5 and up to you and your management plans on whether to kill him of let him walk

Pretty deer though good luck

Just found this pic from 2011. Could be the same deer. If so, I think he needs to go.

Why is that, he's 2.5 in the 2011 pic and 3.5 in this years pic and put on alot of antler and is showing awesome potential if this is the same deer.I've seen a bunch of deer go from 8 to 10pts from 3.5 to 4.5 and even if he doesn't he'll be a much bigger 8!;)b For example we had a deer on our lease gain around 12" of antler from 4.5 to 5.5 so this deer if hes 3.5 now could have alot of growing to do!

He's only 3, I wouldn't get real mad at him just yet. :)

I have him at 3 most likely 4. We are thinking of killing him regardless. Most times a 3yo 8pt isnt going to end up with over ten scoreable points.

With those long beams he's got G4s written all over him next year. And I think he's only 3.

I only see 3.5 If your managment plan is to remove the 8s then take him.

I have a slew of 2yo 8 and 9pts as well as a couple 3yo's with 10+ pts. I have a handful of 1yo 7-9 pts and even one 11pt that is either 1 or 2yo.

Young Deer...Let Him Walk

We try not to take an 8 until 4.5 or up. I've seen 3.5YO 8's become pretty nice deer. Sometimes even become 10 points. Ricky T is right. He has the beam length. Will he ever grow 4'' G4'S? Probably not, but I think he has room to be a 10 next year. Your ranch, your choice though. If it were me, he would walk this year. We are letting an 8 bigger than him walk this year because he looks like he started on his G4's before the velvet shed off.

Exactly what I was thinking. He showed progress from 2 to 3. Give him another year to keep improving.

Jeff, are you overpopulated with bucks? If so, then take him out if he is on the lower end of his age class. Also, something to think about, it isnt necessarily about the number of points but the size of the frame the deer has. He looks to have above avg main beams to me and at least avg spread and mass. With that said, whatever you management plan calls for just follow it and qualify the results each year to see if you are trending in the right direction. My take is that one marginal buck isnt going to hurt your deer herd if he hangs around but if you take him you will never know what he might have become.

I say 3.5 still has a small muscular body. Don't shoot big young bucks!

Update: Have watched this deer a couple times in the flesh. He looks younger than these pics and his horns are decently heavy and a good spread too. We are going to roll the dice a bit and let him walk this year.
