This is a combination of a way i practice with my compound bow and the way i practice with my traditional bow. I thought the combination would make for an interesting challenge. The challenge is to hit (or come as closest to) the end of a cigarette butt. This can be set up by sticking a cigarette butt into a 3D target lengthwise so that just a white circle remains, it provides pretty good contrast to most 3D targets. if you don't have 3D target you can mark butt sized circle on a piece of paper with a sharpie. the second part is that you must start by standing up against your target with your back to it. the take 20 normal stride paces in a random (as random as can be) zig zag pattern. This will give everyone a slightly different distance and angle, but we should all be at relatively close. try not to think out the distance, the goal is to be instinctual. have your arrow nocked by the time you turn. once you turn, draw and release with in 5 seconds. That's it, Have fun and let me know if you want me to come up with something better :D

Ah, kind of like the duels of old, where each opponent walks a certain number of paces, turns and shoots, 'cept our opponent happens to be a small little cigarrette butt!

I don't smoke either so i pick them up off the ground, is that gross? my wife says it's gross. I figure someone has to throw them away and i might as well get a shot off at them first :)

I don't smoke either so if I use a trash can lid at say.........100 paces............never mind. I'll just find a cigarrette butt somewhere.

you don't have to hold 5 seconds, you just have to have released by 5 seconds :D you can release in 2 if you want.

Hmm 20 normal zig zag paces. 10 paces this way and 10 that way...ought to put me about 4' from the butt;)b So this is going to be like a snap shot type thing?

Kind of a snap shot, normal stride paces though :) not heel to toe or anything. i usually end up around 5 to 8 yards doing this. then i shoot then turn around and go further... i figure if we want someone to actually hit it we gotta keep it close right :D

For this purpose I don't think it is gross. My Dad used to pick up butts and smoke them when he was a kid...that's gross.

Just so I'm clear on this. We're going to stagger aimlessly away from the target and not knowing where we are at, spin around and shoot someone else's butt ( or our own butt.).

moreammo has obviously been hunting with some of the same guys I've hunted with.... j/k Sounds like a lot of fun.

Man, what a day so far!! Had to break up a big dog fight (first pic) on my way to set up my target, then it started raining! On top of everything else I had to substitute a white crayon for the cig. butte, thats why the cig.butt looks funny. And no, I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer; realized this as I was sticking my White crayon in my 3-D target that has LOTS of WHITE dots! Oh well, that said, I turned and started wondering back and forth for 20 steps worth, whirled around and flung an arrow! I realized, maybe I should shoot like this more often ( with my back to the target and whirling around to shoot. Don't have time to second guess myself or get target panic!) I am happy with it! Turned out to be approx. 17yd. shot. This is some of that FUN!!!!!

After my drunk imitation walk, I ended up about 13 yards away.

I don't have a 3D target here. Had to use the Cabelas Block.
1. The stinkin cigarette butt.
2. The shot 3" low, 1" left (3 1/4" diagonal)
3. The gear
Great shot idea. Almost like a rabbit hunt ;)b

This was a fun shot idea! I tried to practice a little yesterday and I nearly twisted a knee trying to zig and zag...I need some exercise so I can get in another shape besides round:( I had trouble crossing one foot over the other taking one step one way and one another so I took 3 steps to the right and then 3 steps to the left until I met the requisite 20 paces. Anyway, I ended up about 12 yards from the target, spun and shot. This was a tough shot for me because I like to take my time during the shot process; however, I think the shot actually turned out pretty good. Enough rambling...here are the pics:

Wow, some great shots so far, gentlemen ;)b
Just wanted to post for y'all not to expect FSF shots from mhundt or fletcherfor2 this week....we got all busy getting ready to come to Memphis and just forgot to do it before we got in the truck to leave! We didn't bring a block and I suspect the motel would frown on us weaving around then doing a Midnight Cowboy, whipping back to take a shot, lol. It sure looks fun, though, and I hope this one comes up again sometime :)

OK, Here's my attempt for this week. I did a little better that I have been so I am pleased.

My first shot ended up being about an 11yd shot and taped out at 1 5/8" low:

160337

160338

Too bad this is not "Second Shot Friday". I pulled my first arrow and tried one more time. This time I was less than 1/2" right. I know it does not count but here is a pic anyway:

160339

These were the only two shots I took for the day as I had a bunch of other stuff going on occupying my time.

See y'all later,

Bisch

Well, you definitely have my vote this week Bisch...great shot! Have you given any thought as to what kind of shot we are going to have for this Friday?

I hope that we can get more participants this week; attendance was down a little from normal. I think these threads have plenty more followers than they do shooters...y'all pick them bows up and give us all more shots to look at this week:)

Thanks, Rick, Im guessing it's making a difficult first shot?? Ill come up with one then!!

Here's the deal Fast.

"Your first shot (either hunting or in a 3D shoot) is the only one that counts. There are no do-overs. This game was proposed by Acuna a few weeks ago as a friendly competition to measure the accuracy of your FIRST shot on any given FRIDAY. Hence the title First Shot Friday (or FSF). Your first shot is the ONLY one that counts.

The game was expanded a couple of weeks ago whereby the winner picks the next Friday's shot and starts a new thread for that week.

Every Friday there is to be a new target and distance. Your first shot that Friday (at the current target) is the only one that counts.

I hope this explains the game. Come and play again next Friday."
